The Ceres High JV boys basketball team grabbed 45 rebounds and committed just three turnovers in defeating Modesto Metro Conference rival Johansen 50-40 on Saturday in Ceres.
“I'm happy,” Bulldogs coach Jim Pernetti said. “Those kids are playing their guts out.”
Seven of Ceres High's eight players scored against the Vikings.
Andre Walcott and Marcus Hilgen had 11 points apiece. Rafael Torres, Thomas Vanderlaan, Tony Bradford and Mike Staggs tallied eight, seven and two points, respectively. Mark Courson added one point.
Bradford pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds. Walcott had eight.
Luis Garcia led Johansen with 13 points.
Ceres High took control in the second half.
Down 18-16, the Bulldogs outscored the Vikings 16-4 in the third quarter for a 32-21 lead.
Torres had seven points, including one 3-pointer. Vanderlaan and Hilgen both scored three points. Bradford converted two free throws. Walcott made one foul shot.
Each team scored 18 points in the fourth quarter. Hilgen had six, Torres, Vanderlaan and Bradford three, and Walcott two. Courson tallied one point.
Ceres High knocked down 16 of its 35 free throws. Bradford went 7-for-12 from the foul line. Walcott went 5-for-8.
Vanderlaan scored a team-high 11 points during the Bulldogs' 63-30 loss at Modesto High School on Friday.
Torres and Bradford had six points apiece. Hilgen and Zack Atchison added four and three points, respectively.
Ceres High trailed 38-15 at intermission.
The Panthers outscored the Bulldogs 25-15 in the second half.
Ceres High shot 60 percent (12-for-20) from the charity stripe.
The Bulldogs (2-5) play at Beyer today and host to Downey on Friday. Both games start at 5:45 p.m.
