Central Valley earns runner-up finish at NorCal Classic

Central Valley High School's varsity softball program finished in second place while competing in the Bronze Division of the NorCal Classic this past week in Tracy.

The Hawks had just two wins prior to playing in the 16-team tournament. Central Valley snapped a 12-game losing streak.

"They showed me what they're capable of," coach Margo Arzola said. "I'm proud of them."

Central Valley won three of four games at the NorCal event. Centerfielder Alyssa Meshach and shortstop Malynda Lomeli made the all-tournament team.

The Hawks lost 3-2 to Sonora in the title game on Saturday at the Tracy Sports Complex.

Central Valley cut the deficit to one run in the final inning. Sarah McElroy and Molly Littman both scored on a Wildcat throwing error.

Sonora led 3-0 through five innings.

Vicky Ochoa and freshman Lexy Cordova split time at pitcher.

Cordova had three strikeouts, while Ochoa fanned one.

Vicky singled twice on offense.

McElroy, Lomeli and Selena Villarico all collected one hit.

"Nothing against Sonora, but we really believe we should have won the tournament," Arzola said. "We popped out 13 times. I don't know what happened."

Central Valley edged St. Francis 7-6 in the semifinals on Saturday.

Jessica Berndt hit a three-run homer as the Hawks clawed their way back from a 4-2 deficit in the fifth inning.

Cordova pitched a complete game. She scattered eight hits.

Ochoa doubled and drove in one run.

Meshach batted 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Lomeli finished 2-for-3.

Central Valley defeated Weston Ranch 13-6 and Golden Valley 13-2 on Thursday.

Cordova allowed seven hits and struck out five while propelling the Hawks past Weston Ranch.

Ochoa batted 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs.

Lomeli collected three RBIs.

Meshach knocked in one run.

Ochoa gave up just three hits and retired two batters via strikeout during Central Valley's mercy-rule victory against Golden Valley.

Meshach batted 1-for-3 with three RBIs.

Ochoa and Berndt chipped in with two RBIs apiece.

Mia Lorenzo had two hits and one RBI.

Central Valley will play at Los Banos on Wednesday. The WAC contest will begin at 4 p.m.
