Central Valley High wrestlers compete at Reno tournament

Central Valley High School's varsity wrestling program made its first-ever appearance at the Sierra Nevada Classic last week.

The Hawks placed 70th with 34 points at the 96-team event. The tournament featured schools from California, Nevada, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. Matches were held on 15 different mats.

"I would have liked to taken home some medals but it was a tough tournament," head coach Rob Beckhart said. "The kids had a good time. They gained a lot of confidence."

Alex Alvarez won three of five matches in the 119-pound division. He beat Foothill's Austin Crowell (pin, 1:20), Mazama's Shane Olechea (pin, 2:59) and Fallon's Robert White (pin, 2:25). Alvarez lost to Beyer's Gage Parkinson (pin, 4:57) and Ponderosa's Alex Greybill (pin, 0:32).

"That's the best I've seen him wrestle," Beckhart said. "I'm proud of him."

Nestor Berumen (135 pounds) and Jaime Lomeli (152s) posted identical 2-2 records.

Berumen beat Lincoln of Stockton's Joshua Garcia (pin, 2:45) and Prospect High's Justin Estoris (decision, 5-3). He lost to Lowry's Brandon Okuma (major decision, 16-5) and Henley's Conner Fitzgerald (pin, 1:38).

Lomeli beat Pioneer's Max Tsutsui (pin, 1;16) and Henley's Carlos Hernandez (pin, 4:08). He lost to Spanish Springs' Garek Tauchen and College Park's JJ Chou (decision, 10-4).

Michael Manzur (103s), Jeffery Phetsomphou (112s), Vincent Martinez (125s) and James Jackson (285s) all went 1-2.

Manzur beat McKinleyville High's Tyler Collins (pin, 1:24). He lost to Alisal High's Johnny Alonzo (pin, 1:24) and Capital High's Hunter Manwaring (pin, 0:31).

Phetsomphou beat McNair's Alvin Ho (major decision, 16-7). He lost to Mountain View's Jake McDonald (pin, 1:16) and Frankin of Elk Grove's Hunter Ramos (decision, 7-1).

Martinez beat Hug High's Johnny Servanos (pin, 0:43). He lost to Bellarmine Prep's Cassidy Octavio (pin, 0:48) and Mazama's Trevor Anderson (pin, 0:55).

Jackson beat Buchanan's Frankie Jiminez (pin, 1:20). He lost to Ponderosa's Riley Nooner (pin, 1:18) and Lowry's Cody Anderson (pin, 0:59).

Abel Medina (130s), Edward Nunez (145s), Jaime Tadeo (160s), Evan Elliot (171s) and Johnny Proctor (189s) had 0-2 marks.

Medina lost to Spanish Springs' Austin Yohey (pin, 3:160 and McLane's Louis Arellano (decision, 8-4).

Nunes lost to Gorman's Christian Wilhelm (pin, 1:17) and Arber View's Kieth Lasko (pin, 0:48).

Tadeo lost to McNair's James Wilson (pin, 3:27) and Mountain View's Wyatt Bloom (pin, 2:56).

Elliot lost to Castro Valley's Adam Busch (pin, 0:26) and Terra Linda's Nate Keeve (pin, 4:56). 

Proctor lost to Bellarmine Prep's Daniel Chaid (pin, 1:49) and Del Oro's Kevin Love (pin, 4:05).

Josh Beckhart (215s) and Derek Earnest (140s) withdrew from the tournament due to injuries.

Beckhart lost by forfeit to Burns' Landon Hanner. Josh was slowed by an ankle injury.

Earnest lost his opening-round match (technical fall, 17-0) to Gold Beach's Derek Carl. He had to injury default (shoulder) against Liberty's Cody Krimm.
