Ceres High participated in the Central California Conference diving championships at Johansen High School on Thursday. The Bulldogs swept the competition.

James Carswell won the varsity boys title.

Bailey MacArthur claimed the varsity girls title.

Kirena Duffel finished in the top 12 in the varsity girls competition.

"They've pushed so hard to get better," said Ceres coach Glen Simonds. "They deserve everything they got."

The top three finishers earned medals.

Carswell placed first in a field of 12 with an overall score of 317.30. The junior compiled a perfect 6-0 record in league this season.

"James does real hard dives and he does them good," Simonds said.

Added Carswell: "It's pretty cool that I won. This is my first year."

MacArthur finished first in a field of 22 with a score of 325.55.

"I'm going to drop her (Bailey) down to JV for section trials," Simonds said. "She has a good chance at winning."

MacArthur is just a freshman. She finished ahead of Turlock junior Ashley Jaureguy (315.30), Modesto High senior Melissa Fulk (268.65), Davis senior Natalie Allsup (264.65) and Davis junior Katie Johnston (258.50). MacArthur lost to Jaureguy at a dual meet in Turlock last month.

"I was hoping for top three," said MacArthur, who compiled a 4-1 record during the regular season. "I wasn't expecting first.

"I can't believe I won."

Duffel, a junior, took 11th with a score of 206.75.

"Kirena did really good too," Simonds said. "If she didn't fail a dive she would have been in the top six or seven.

"The best part about Kirena is that she had a real mental block. She was scared of a couple of dives. She pushed through it and got herself to do it."
