The Ceres High wrestling team faced its toughest challenge of the season Wednesday night in Ceres.
“We thought it would be a lot closer,” Bulldogs coach Steve Vieira said. “But they're a little more experienced. They have five or six seniors.”
Downey improved to 3-0 in the Modesto Metro Conference with a 50-13 drubbing of Ceres High. The Bulldogs fell to 1-2 in the league standings.
“We had to wrestle better than we have all year to beat them,” Vieira said.
Ceres High dropped 11 of 14 bouts.
Mike Tubera, Marc Dias and Zack Van Wagoner accounted for the Bulldogs' three victories.
“They all wrestled a good match,” Vieira said.
Tubera pinned Angel Del Villar in 1:13 in the 112-pound weight class.
Dias earned a 17-9 major decision victory against Miguel Reyes at 135 pounds. Dias outscored Reyes 14-3 during the final two rounds. He trailed 6-3 at the end of the first round.
Van Wagoner defeated Justin Thomas by decision, 9-5, at 152 pounds. Van Wagoner held a 5-0 lead at the end of the first round.
Nathan Niemeyer, Kyle Curry, Daniel Tubera, Jake Keidel, Jacob Lopez, Tony Chavez, Steven Chavez, Justin Roman, Brian Allen and Donnie Barker failed to win their respective matches.
Niemeyer, Curry, Tubera and Keidel all lost by decision.
Casey Carver edged Niemeyer 8-7 at 275 pounds.
Jesus Oseguera defeated Curry 8-5 at 119 pounds.
Kevin Dutra topped Tubera 15-10 at 160 pounds.
Erik Alvarez handled Keidel 7-1 at 140 pounds.
Lopez and Tony Chavez both lost by major decision.
Matt Ippolito beat Lopez 12-4 at 130 pounds.
Jed Baker shut out Chavez 12-0 at 145 pounds.
Barker, Allen, Roman and Steven Chavez all lost by pin.
Tim Birmingham pinned Chavez in 3:20 at 171 pounds. Birmingham held a commanding 13-1 lead.
Brandt Anderson pinned Roman in 3:15 at 189 pounds.
Eddie Flores pinned Allen in 2:52 at 103 pounds.
Tony Fernandes pinned Barker in 50 seconds at 125 pounds.
