Ceres golfers fourth at CCC championships

Ceres High placed fourth in a field of 10 with a 43-over-par 403 at the Central California Conference Boys Golf Championships at Creekside Monday afternoon.

The top four teams advanced to the sub-section tournament, which will be held at Dry Creek in Galt on Tuesday, May 11.

"I was happy with the way the kids played," said Ceres coach Butch Mendonca.

The Bulldogs finished behind Turlock (382), Beyer (392) and Johansen (394).

"We're just a step below Beyer and Johansen," Mendonca said. "Turlock is the best team in the league."

Three of Ceres' five players posted scores in the 70s.

Senior Ben Martinez shot a 4-over 76.

"Ben tied for second for low score," Mendonca said. "Seven kids shot 76."

Juniors Nick Wilcox and Jeff Warn both shot 79.

Sophomore Bobby McFarlane shot an 82.

"That's by far their (Jeff and Bobby's) best 18-hole scores of the year," Mendonca said. "It was a good time to do it."

Senior Adam Dusi shot an 87.

Turlock's Scott Qualle and Beyer's Daniel Indelicato earned low-medalist honors with 2-over 74s.

Dawgs defeat Knights

Coach Mendonca didn't know if his top player would be able to compete against Downey at Creekside on Thursday.

"His grandfather passed away," Mendonca said.

Wilcox showed up just in time for the match and started in the sixth and final spot in the Ceres High boys golf team's lineup.

"He knew we needed him as a team," Mendonca said.

Wilcox shot a 4-over-par 40 with one birdie, three pars and five bogeys in leading the Bulldogs to a 203-to-212 victory over Downey.

Ceres finished in a fourth-place tie with Merced in the league standings. The Bulldogs improved to 10-8 in the Central California Conference.

The Knights fell to 6-12 in league.

Martinez shot an even-par 36 for low-medalist honors. He had two birdies, five pars and two bogeys. Martinez birdied the No. 1 and 2 holes.

Warn shot a 41. He had one birdie, three pars, four bogeys and one double bogey.

Dusi and McFarlane both shot a 43.

Dusi had four pars, three bogeys and two double bogeys.

McFarlane had four pars, three bogeys and two double bogeys.

Just one of Downey's players posted a score in the 30s. Zach Mucha finished with a 2-over 38. Kyle Shepardson and Kevin Smith shot 40 and 42, respectively. Paul Streeter and Ryan Jackson both shot a 46.

Dawgs rout Panthers

Ceres defeated Modesto High by 24 strokes, 196 to 220, at Modesto Municipal Golf Course on Tuesday, April 27.

The Bulldogs improved to 9-8 in the CCC, while the Panthers fell to 2-15 in league.

Wilcox and Chad Jantz earned low-medalist honors. They fired 2-over-par 37s.

Jantz had two birdies, five pars and two double bogeys.

"That was his best score of the year," Mendonca said.

Wilcox had seven pars and two bogeys.

Martinez, Warn and Dusi finished with 39, 40 and 43, respectively.

Martinez had five pars and four bogeys.

Warn had one birdie, two pars and six bogeys.

Dan Willsen shot a 39 for Modesto.
