Six Bulldogs placed in the top six at the 41st Annual Ceres High Wrestling Invitational on Saturday at Central Valley High School.

“It's been four, five or six years since Ceres has done something like this at their own tournament,” Bulldogs coach Steve Vieira said.

Ceres High had one individual champion. Jake Keidel took first with a 3-0 record in the 140-pound weight class. The junior also earned the lower weight MVP award.

“That's the best he's wrestled all year by far,” Vieira said. “He was dominant the whole tournament.”

Marc Dias and Zack Van Wagoner took second with 3-1 records at 135 and 152 pounds, respectively.

“That's a big step for them, especially for Marc,” Vieira said. “He was beating the crap out of people.”

Mike Tubera took third with a 3-1 record at 112 pounds.

Steven Chavez took third with a 4-1 record at 171 pounds.

Tony Chavez took fourth with a 3-2 record at 145 pounds.

“Mike's improving,” Vieira said. “He took fifth last week.”

The Bulldogs finished fourth in the team standings with 123.5 points. Dos Palos, Sutter Union and Sunnyside placed first, second and third with 197, 189.5 and 124 points, respectively.

“Our goal was to finish in the top three,” Vieira said. “We came close. We finished half a point out of third.”

Ceres High will participate in Lincoln High's Dave Mendoza Memorial Invitational on Saturday in Stockton.

“We expect more out of them now,” Vieira said. “I think we can be a top-three team. That's going to be a goal for us this week.” - By DALE BUTLER / Staff reporter of the Ceres (Calif.) Courier
