The Ceres High JV girls basketball team won two of three games last week to improve to 7-3 overall.
Kaylee Brown had 12 points, 10 rebounds and two steals in a 32-25 victory over Grace Davis on Saturday in Ceres.
Marissa Cabusas scored eight points, grabbed 14 rebounds and registered three steals. Aimee Gunzenhauser added five points, eight rebounds and five steals.
The Bulldogs outscored the Spartans 29-14 in the final three quarters of play. Brown, Cabusas, Sabrina Mendoza, Gunzenhauser and Lisa Seabourn had 11, eight, five, three and two points apiece.
“We put a lot of pressure on them and they made some turnovers,” Ceres coach Kassi Baker said.
The Bulldogs trailed 11-3 at the end of the first quarter.
Ceres High made 15 of its 27 free throws, while the Spartans made 7 of their 18.
Brown and Cabusas combined to score 31 points as the Bulldogs defeated Downey on Thursday in Ceres.
Brown led Ceres High with 19 points. Cabusas tallied 12 points.
Jayme Westbrook, Seabourn, Gunzenhauser and Melissa Hernandez added eight, six, four and three points, respectively.
The Bulldogs limited the Knights to four points in the first quarter, two in the second, one in the third and zero in the fourth.
Ceres High reached double figures in scoring in every quarter, including 16 in the first, 15 in the second, 17 in the third and 11 in the fourth.
The Bulldogs made 13 of their 30 free throws.
Brown and Ceres High fell 41-38 to Beyer on Tuesday, Jan. 10 in Modesto.
Brown finished with 18 points.
Mendoza added six points. Seabourn, Cabusas and Gunzenhauser had four points apiece.
The Bulldogs struggled during the first three quarters, falling behind 33-22.
Ceres High outscored Beyer 16-9 in the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs made 11 of 21 foul shots, while the Patriots made three of eight.
Ceres High completed the first portion of their league schedule with three wins and two losses.
“We should have done a lot better,” Baker said.
Modesto High dealt the Bulldogs their first defeat.
Hoover leads frosh girls
Vaneza Hoover, Queen Israel, Luvleen Brar, Tiffany Burnett and Erica Castrejon guided the Ceres High freshman girls basketball team to a 29-25 victory over Grace Davis on Saturday in Ceres.
“That was our first league win,” Bulldogs coach Drew Brown said. “The girls did a great job of not giving up and playing hard.”
Hoover scored 10 points in the second half and grabbed 10 rebounds for Ceres High, which improved to 1-4 in the MMC standings.
“That's the best Vaneza's played this season,” Brown said. “Her presence inside really helped us. She's big and she's a good athlete.”
Israel tallied eight points and pulled down four rebounds. Brar had six points and six rebounds. Burnett had four points and seven rebounds. Castrejon added one point and 11 rebounds.
The Bulldogs overcame a six-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Ceres High scored 13 points. Grace Davis managed to score just three points.
“Our full-court pressure defense gave them some problems,” Brown said. “We also outrebounded them.”
The Bulldogs won despite shooting just 21 percent (13-for-62) from the field and 30 percent (3-for-10) from the free-throw line.
