Ceres swimmers sweep Beyer

With Gordon Brogdon, Eric Scudder, Jarrett Mills, Dmitry Polovin, Joey Rossi and Dwight Braverman leading the way, the Ceres High boys swimming team beat Beyer 11-68 on Friday in Ceres.

Ceres won nine of 12 events.

"In the events we didn't win, we had second-place finishes," said Ceres coach Sue Garcia.

The Bulldogs improved to 3-2-1 in the Central California Conference standings.

Brogdon won the 100 freestyle in a personal-record time of 51.17 seconds and 100 backstroke in 59.91 seconds.

Brogdon beat Beyer's Jason Braun in the 100 free, who completed the race in 52.40 seconds.

"He was first in league," Brogdon said.

"I'm excited and happy about it but I also want to fight for my title (at the section trials)," said Brogdon, who could be sidelined for the rest of the season if he doesn't recover from right shoulder surgery, which was performed at the Modesto (McHenry) Medical Center yesterday.

Scudder won the 200 free in 1:55.08 and 500 free in 5:31.83.

Mills won the 50 free in 25.19 seconds.

Polovin won the 100 butterfly in 1:04.48 and placed second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.18.

Ceres' 200 medley 'A' relay team of Brogdon, Braverman, Scudder and Mills placed first in 1:54.7.

Ceres' 400 free 'A' relay team of Mills, Rossi, Scudder and Brogdon placed first in 3:37.70.

James Carswell placed first in the diving competition.

Rossi placed second in the 200 free in 2:01.48 and 500 free in 5:37.04.

Mike Polovin placed second in the 200 individual medley in 2:34.69.

Braverman placed second in the 50 free in 26.31 seconds.

Ceres' 200 medley 'B' relay team of Mike Polovin, Markus Richter, Dmitry Polovin and Rossi placed second in 2:02.57.

Ceres' 200 free 'A' relay team of Braverman, Dmitry Polovin, Mike Polovin and Richter placed second.

Ceres' 400 free 'B' relay team of Braverman, Mike Polovin, Dmitry Polovin and Richter placed second in 3:57.65.

Dawgs defeat Patriots

The Ceres High girls swimming team defeated Beyer despite competing without two of its top athletes. Sarah Maher was home sick and Jaymie Lenz had to attend another school-related event.

The Bulldogs won eight of 12 events en route to a 107-78 victory over the Patriots in Ceres on Friday.

"I'm just really proud of all the swimmers," said Ceres coach Sue Garcia, whose team improved to 3-3 in the Central California Conference standings.

Katie Griffith won the 200 freestyle in 2:12.10 and 100 butterfly in 1:08.54.

"She qualified for sections in the 200," Garcia said.

Amanda Arrollo won the 50 free in 28.58 seconds and took second in the 100 free in 1:04.66.

Gretchen Loftis won the 100 free in a personal-record time of 1:03.45.

Tristin Long won the 500 free in a personal-record 6:17.74.

Lauren Griffen won the 100 backstroke in 1:15.73 and took second in the 100 fly in 1:20.05.

Bailey Macarthur won the diving event.

Ceres' 200 free 'A' relay team of Arrollo, Kirena Duffel, Amber Castino and Griffith took first in 1:57.25.

Duffel took second in the 100 back in 1:18.35.

Leslie Helm took second in the 100 breast in 1:24.08.

Ceres' 200 medley 'A' relay team of Duffel (back), Helm (breast), Griffith (fly) and Arrollo (free) took second in 2:11.13.

Ceres' 400 free 'A' relay team of Castino, Griffen, Kelli Farrell and Loftis took second in 4:21.88.
