Ceres High head varsity football coach Brett Johnson spent part of his 2007 summer assisting with the construction of a worship center in South Africa.

The 4,500-square foot facility was built in the township of Soshanguve, where low-income families live in 100- to 150-square foot shacks.

On July 26, Johnson and five other members from Modesto's Big Valley Grace Community Church will board a plane in San Francisco and embark on a goodwill mission trip to Slovenia.

"I'm very excited and blessed to be a part of this," Brett said. "This is where God wants me to go."

Johnson and Co. will remodel a commercial building in a two-week span.

"We're going to transform it into a functioning church," Brett said. "It's very hard work but it's rewarding."

Johnson will return home to Ceres on Aug. 9.

"Last summer was my first big trip," said Brett, who had to sacrifice being away from his wife and two sons for 18 days. "It's just part of being a humble servant and doing your part to help out."
