CHS girls first at preseason meet; CV boys finish second

Ceres High School's varsity girls cross country program made a statement during the Western Athletic Conference preseason meet last week.

The Bulldogs, runners-up in the conference's overall standings last year, finished in first place with a team score of 45 on Wednesday at Ceres River Bluff Regional Park.

Ceres High topped Los Banos (51), Livingston (67), Central Catholic (109), Patterson (110), Pacheco (130) and Central Valley (177).

"Hopefully, we keep it going," Bulldog standout runner Cecilia Carretero said.

Ceres High's top five runners were Cecilia Carretero, Dia Borden, Bryce Ford, Lisette Carretero and Laura Espinoza.

Cecilia Carretero placed first on the 3.1-mile course in 22 minutes, 21 seconds.

She bested 63 other competitors.

Dia (23:32), Bryce (23:48), Lisette (23:56) and Laura (25:46) placed seventh, eighth, 11th and 18th, respectively.

Ceres High's Jeanette Torrez (23rd, 26:19), Arecelia Hermosillo (26th, 26:48), Maria Murillo (37th, 28:59), Aurora Almonte (44th, 30:29) and Jordan Cervantez (51st, 32:00) also competed.

"Everybody has gotten better," Ford said.

Central Valley's Citlalli Soltero, Casandra Maldonado, Harpreet Kaur, Alyssa Washburn, Marybel Cortez, Luara Aguilar and Karina Miranda took 31st (27:21), 34th (27:42), 35th (28:46), 41st (29:13), 43rd (29:54), 45th (30:58) and 46th (31:00), respectively.

Central Valley and Ceres High placed second and sixth, respectively, during the boys competition.

Livingston (29) won the team title.

The Hawks (73) finished ahead of Pacheco (86), Patterson (88), Los Banos (116), Ceres High (123) and Central Catholic (211).

Ben Saldana (seventh, 19:19), Roberto Rosas (12th, 20:08), Roberto Aguilar (16th, 20:25), Nick Gonzalez (21st, 20:56), Francisco Gradilla (22nd, 20:57) and Hawk Duarte (22nd, 20:57) led Central Valley.

Hawk runners Michael Collins (41st, 22:22), Julian Camarillo (48th, 23:27) and Jesus Pullido (49th, 23:28) participated as well.

Judas Chavarin (sixth, 19:11) paced the Bulldogs.

Ceres High teammates Kevin Ramirez (26th, 21:16), Ryan Gustin (33rd, 21:51), Brett Gonzalez (35th, 21:56), Lorenzo Trinidad (38th, 22:01), Edgar Torres (43rd, 22:32), Jao Moita (44th, 23:03), Jacob Edwards (52nd, 23:37), Christian Stein (56th, 24:15) and Dustin Palacek (58th, 24:35) also competed.
