CHS grads guide college teams

Ceres High grad Ryan Thornberry helped lead the Cal State Stanislaus men's golf team to a first-place finish at the Mauna Lani Intercollegiate, held Oct. 31-Nov. 1, at the Mauna Lani North Course in Kohala Coast, Hawaii.

The senior tied for second overall with a 5-under-par 211.

The Warriors topped Sonoma State by six strokes, 861-867.

Thornberry has competed in four tournaments this year. He has finished first twice, second once and sixth one time.

Thornberry won the California Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Golf Most Valuable Player award in 2004-05.

MJC cross country

Ceres High grad Natalie Alvarez and the Pirates qualified for the state meet, to be held on Nov. 19 at Fresno's Woodward Park.

Alvarez, a freshman, finished 13th in 20 minutes, 18 seconds on the 3-mile course at the NorCal Community College Cross Country Championships on Saturday. The top 14 runners earned All-NorCal honors.
