The Ceres High boys tennis team ended a three-match losing streak on Thursday in Merced.
Ceres' Kenny Strangio defeated Merced's Jared Petker 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in No. 3 singles play and lifted the Bulldogs to a 3-2 victory over the Bears.
"If he would have lost, we would have lost," said Ceres coach Brandon Moring.
The senior finally delivered.
"That was a huge win for Kenny," Moring said. "He hadn't got one all year."
Ceres improved to 1-3 in the Central California Conference standings.
Merced fell to 0-3 in league.
The Bulldogs won two of three singles and one of two doubles matches.
"The overall team effort wasn't there on Tuesday," Moring said. "They fought hard (against Merced). They played smart. They showed a lot of heart."
Roland Salazar beat Merced's Sean Golbad in two sets, 6-3, 6-2, in No. 1 singles play.
"He's going to have a future in tennis," Moring said.
Kyle Fliflet and Warren McDonald beat Merced's Andrew Zajac and Jacob Wiliams in two sets, 6-4, 6-1, in No. 1 doubles play.
"Kyle and Warren played well," Moring said.
G. Singh beat Ceres' Russell Alcorn in two sets, 6-3, 6-3, in No. 1 singles play.
Ben Read and Ryan Keeler beat Ceres' Chris Kitavong and Jose Magana in two sets, 6-0, 6-1, in No. 2 doubles play.
Beyer 4, Ceres 1
The Bulldogs lost 4-1 to the Patriots in Modesto on Tuesday, March 9.
Ceres dropped two of three singles and both doubles matches.
Beyer improved to 1-2 in the CCC.
Ceres fell to 0-3 in league.
Salazar picked up his first career win. The sophomore beat Beyer's Taylor Martin in two sets, 6-1, 6-2, in No. 2 singles play.
Michael Hunger beat Alcorn in two sets, 6-2, 6-1, in No. 1 singles play.
Matt Brody beat Strangio in two sets, 6-0, 6-0, in No. 3 singles play.
John Azevedo and Michael Martin beat Fliflet and McDonald in two sets, 6-0, 6-4, in No. 1 doubles play.
