More than 100 youth have signed up for the Ceres Cowboys 2nd Annual Football Skills Camp.

The non-contact camp, which is open to boys and girls ages 7-14, will be held at Mae Hensley Jr. High School this Saturday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Approximately 25 coaches from the Cowboys organization will be teaching players skills they can use on the football field. They'll provide instruction in tackling, blocking, passing, catching, kicking and basic football terminology and fundamentals. The day will conclude with a punt, pass and kick competition, with an award for the winners in their respective age group.

"We're ready to rock and roll," said Reg Evans, Cowboys president/JV head coach.

Former professional football players Nick Eddy and Harry Johnson will be the featured guest speakers.

Eddy played for the Detroit Lions for seven years. He finished third in the balloting for the Heisman Trophy and won a national championship while playing for Notre Dame football team in 1966. The former running back is going to speak at 10:30 a.m.

Johnson spoke at last summer's camp. He played defensive end in the NFL for five years and in the USFL with Steve Young and the L.A. Express for two years.

The Cowboys camp was created last summer in an effort to prepare veterans and new players for the upcoming season.

"Hopefully, it just gets bigger and bigger," Evans said.

"Eventually, I would like to get some other teams (from the Delta and Trans-Valley youth football leagues) involved and do one shebang."

Cost is $25 and space is limited to 150.

Pre-registration will be offered on-site at 7:30 a.m.

"They can sign up that day," Evans said.
