Central Valley’s varsity competitive cheer team earned high praise from judges following its dominant performance at the JAMZ School Nationals this past month in Las Vegas.
“You have strong entertainment value to your routine because it’s well-composed and you deliver it as a well-oiled machine,” the panel commented. “You smile genuinely, and you engage the audience. Job well done.”
The Hawks claimed multiple titles at the two-day event, which was staged Feb. 20-21 at the Orleans Arena.
“Central Valley varsity absolutely shined under the bright lights in Vegas,” head coach Jolissa Guillory said. “The varsity team showed a calm, confident composure behind the stage that created an impressive presence on the stage during their routine.”
Central Valley’s 25-person comp cheer squad executed a routine which featured cheer, dance, jumps, stunting and tosses.
The Hawks claimed Grand (highest score of all levels) and Level (highest score in Level 1) championship banners.
Central Valley also placed first in the Varsity Non-Tumbling Level 1 Large Division.
“Central Valley varsity held the highest score over the entire weekend,” Guillory said.
“As a coach, I try to preach confidence is key,” she added. “If you’re enjoying yourself and having fun during your performance so will everyone else. We go through routine checking one thing off at a time, never getting ahead of ourselves. Focusing on one task at a time, and if everyone does their part and job, we will succeed. This year, we focused on success is earned, never given. This team absolutely earned every bit of their success together.”
Central Valley posted an overall score of 97.99 out of 100.
The Hawks finished ahead of five other teams, including IHS Rolling Thunder (95.96), Lincoln Trojans Varsity (95.53), Artesia High School (93.18), Huntington Park High School (93.16) and Monte Vista Christian Mustangs (92.18).
Central Valley had a score of 98.20 the second day and 97.60 the first day.
Each routine lasted two minute, 30 seconds.
“Day 2 score was the highest score Central Valley has received in three years of competing,” Guillory said.
