Central Valley High School's AAU girls basketball team won one of two games during its second week of Modesto Junior College summer league play on June 18.

"The kids had a good time," head coach Jesse Padilla said.

Added standout guard Julie Calderon: "We've progressed a lot since last year."

Calderon totaled 37 points for the Hawks. She also accumulated assists, steals and blocks.

"Julie's making everybody else around her better," Padilla said.

"I'm trying really hard because this is my last year," Calderon said. "I shoot 150 3-pointers after every practice."

Central Valley edged Hilmar 43-40 in Game One.

Calderon poured in a team-high 16 points, including two clutch free throws in the final 25 seconds.

Phylicia Martinez had nine points, while Samantha Mustaca added eight points.

Whitney Richardson and Miranda Espinoza chipped in five points each.

Central Valley lost 53-40 to Beyer in Game 2.

The Patriots outscored the Hawks 29-21 after intermission

"Playing two games back to back is tough," Padilla said. "We were just tired."

Calderon led Central Valley with 21 points.

Martinez and Mustaca contributed nine and six points, respectively. Espinoza and Jessica Rodriguez finished with two point each.

"We definitely have a lot to work on," said Julie, who will continue to play for two teams this summer, including Central Valley and Ceres Shock.

The Hawks will participate in a tournament at Stanislaus State this week.
