Central Valley High School upset Valley Oak League opponent Sonora 9-6 in varsity boys tennis on Thursday in Ceres.

"This was a great win for the team," Hawks coach Roland Calagos said. "We've lost to them the last two years."

Central Valley moved to 2-2 in the VOL standings.

Sonora dropped to 2-2 in conference play.

The 2007 Hawks tallied just two league victories.

"We've improved," Calagos said. "That's the big thing."

The Hawks won all four doubles and three of nine singles matches against the Wildcats.

"It came down to both doubles teams," Calagos said. "They're the ones that pushed us over to win. They were very consistent and had a lot of patience."

Jiro Godinez and Tony Leon defeated Sonora's Daniel Howard and Dylan Burns, and Jason Biehl and Andrew Reyes by identical scores of 10-4 in doubles play.

Will Berryhill and Heath Sousa defeated Biehl and Reyes, and Howard and Burns by identical scores of 10-8.

Anthony Macias, Paul Sidhu and Ricardo Leon all went 1-2 in singles play for the Hawks.

Macias beat Chris Sanchez 6-0. He lost 6-4 to Erik Segerstrom and 6-2 to Luke Bergan.

Sidhu beat Sanchez 6-0. He lost 6-3 to Bergan and 6-4 to Segerstrom.

Leon beat Sanchez 6-2. He lost 6-2 to both Bergan and Segerstrom.
