Dawgs earn playoff berth

The Ceres High varsity boys water polo team clinched a playoff berth with a 16-3 win over Grace Davis on Thursday in Modesto.

The Bulldogs found themselves in a must-win game after losing 7-6 to the Oakdale Mustangs on Tuesday, Oct. 28.

“We had a good practice yesterday,” said Ceres coach Sonja Raynes. “And everybody was quite clear with what their team role was.”

Added Ceres senior Joey Rossi: “We were ready for this game. We didn't want to lose.”

The victory helped the Bulldogs secure a third-place finish in the Modesto Metro Conference at 7-5. The top three teams advanced to the postseason, including Johansen, Modesto High and Ceres. Oakdale lost 10-4 to Beyer and finished fourth in the league standings with a 6-6 record.

Rossi scored a game-high seven goals for the Bulldogs. Vitaly Polovin, Max Ottersbach, George Polovin and Markus Richter all had two goals. Chris Rossi added one goal. Goalkeeper Miguel Castillo blocked eight shots.

“We worked so well together,” Joey Rossi said.
