Downey stormed back from a 10-point, halftime deficit and defeated the Ceres High varsity boys basketball team 39-34 in the third-place game of the Davis-Yolo Tournament on Saturday.
"We were playing not to lose instead of to win," said Ceres coach Jason Martin.
Zeph Tyson had a game-high 14 points, including three 3-pointers, and Donny Mekeel scored 12 points for the Knights, who improved to 7-2 overall.
Zack Wiedenbeck and Charlie Cunha scored 11 and nine points, respectively, for Ceres (3-6).
"Our chemistry is getting a lot better every game," Martin said.
The Bulldogs led 26-16 at intermission, 32-25 at the end of the third quarter.
"We played a great first half," Martin said.
Downey outscored Ceres 14-2 in the fourth quarter.
"We have to learn how to finish off teams and play 32 minutes of basketball," Martin said.
The Bulldogs won one of three games at the eight-team tournament. Wiedenbeck made the all-tourney team.
Del Oro defeated Ceres 54-37 in the semifinals Friday night.
Wiedenbeck, Cunha and Matt Schwark had 11, eight and four points, respectively, for the Bulldogs.
Alex Lewis scored a game-high 16 points, and Brandon Ford, Matt Cassell and Luke Vaughn had six points apiece for Del Oro.
Del Oro took control by outscoring Ceres 20-6 in the second quarter. The Bulldogs led 11-4 at the end of the first quarter.
Del Oro outscored Ceres 30-20 in the second half.
The Bulldogs shot 60 percent (12-for-20) from the free-throw line for the game. Del Oro shot 70 percent (14-for-20).
Schwark, Wiedenbeck and Cunha scored 11, 10 and nine points, respectively, in leading the Bulldogs to a 46-42 win over host Davis in the opening round of the tourney on Thursday.
Ceres led 25-24 at the break, and outscored Davis 21-18 in the second half, including 15-11 in the fourth quarter.
Sonora edges Ceres
Cunha and Rafael Valencia each had 14 points during the Bulldogs' 56-54 loss to the Wildcats in non-league play at Ceres High School on Tuesday, Dec. 14.
Dustin Scholl scored a game-high 17 points, including the game-winning basket, and teammate Ryan Robertson added 10 points for Sonora.
Ceres led 25-21 at intermission.
