Ceres High varsity boys basketball head coach Brian de la Porte had no complaints following his team's sixth-place finish at the 36th Annual Frank Godinez Tournament this past week in Turlock.
The Bulldogs showed flashes of excellence while compiling a 1-2 record at the eight-team event.
Ceres High dropped to 1-5 on the year.
"I told the kids don't worry about it," de la Porte said while talking about his team's early-season struggles. "We'll be fine. If we take care of the ball, and play smarter and with a lot of energy, we can beat anybody."
Ceres High lost 54-45 to Modesto High on Thursday.
Jimbo Pernetti scored a team-high 13 points for the Bulldogs.
Harman Chung added 11 points.
Abel Reyes had six points.
Caden Johnson and Terry Brogdon both collected five points.
Jr. Garcia contributed three points.
Ceres High led 30-26 at intermission.
The Panthers outscored the Bulldogs 28-15 in the second half.
"We came out flat," de la Porte said. "We didn't play with any energy. We played like we were down even though we were winning."
Ceres High knocked off Beyer 56-46 on Friday.
The Bulldogs had four players score in double figures, including Pernetti (15), Reyes (14), Johnson (13) and Chung (10).
Garcia added four points.
Grace Davis defeated Ceres High 60-51 for fifth place on Saturday.
Chung had a team-high 16 points.
Pernetti tallied 15 points.
Garcia chipped in with eight points.
Johnson and Reyes totaled six points each.
The two teams combined to make 14 3-pointers, including 10 by the Spartans.
"We had an opportunity to win," de la Porte said. "We just didn't close it out. They shot the ball extremely well."
Ceres High led at halftime during each of its two losses at the Turlock tournament.
"We just need to execute down the stretch," de la Porte said.
The Bulldogs will play at home for the first time this season on Wednesday.
Ceres High will battle the Calaveras Redskins at 7:15 p.m.
The Bulldogs will play host to Enochs Saturday night at 8.
"We have eight more preseason games left," de la Porte said. "Our goal is to win them all. It's going to be tough."
