Ceres High had a productive outing during the Grace Davis Spartan Classic varsity boys soccer tournament last week in Modesto.

The Bulldogs finished in first place in Pool A with two victories and one loss.

"I'm very pleased with their performance," head coach Koeurn Phe said. "The kids fought hard. They were physical."

Ceres High shut out Grace Davis 1-0 Saturday morning (9 a.m.) and routed Los Banos 4-1 in the afternoon (11 a.m.).

The Bulldogs managed to beat the Spartans despite having four goals disallowed.

Pablo Gomez scored for Ceres High.

"It would have been heart-breaking if we lost that game," Phe said.

Luis Martinez tallied a game-high two goals against the Tigers.

Gomez and Fernando Garduno both added one goal.

Ceres High opened the tournament on Friday (4 p.m.) with a 1-0 loss to Buhach Colony.

The Bulldogs closed out the 16-team event with a 2-0 loss to Pool B winner Merced (3-1-0) in a bonus-round contest on Saturday (1 p.m.).

"They didn't dominate us," Phe said. "We had our opportunities. I'd like to play them again. It would be a close call."

Ceres High played three times in a span of five hours in the blazing heat during the final day of the tourney.

Phe's voluntary summer workout regimen served as preparation for the competition. It allowed his players to get acclimated to hot weather.

"The kids showed a lot of courage," he said. "That's Bulldog soccer."
