Jessica Rodriguez, the top singles player on Central Valley High School's varsity girls tennis team, upped her conference record to 10-2 last week.

The senior won twice in the Hawks' 13-2 loss to Sierra during a Valley Oak League round-robin showdown on Thursday in Ceres.

Rodriguez defeated Ann McFerran (6-3) and Natalie Ray (6-1). She lost to Vannida Nguyen (6-4).

"I've been having her practice against some of the guys," Central Valley head coach Greg Hawn said. "I think that's helping quite a bit."

Katie Avila and Mickayla Belcher, the Hawks' No. 2 and 3 singles players, lost all three of their matches.

Avila fell 6-0 to Nguyen, 7-6 (2) to Ray and 6-0 to McFerran.

Belcher was beaten by Ray (6-1), McFerran (6-0) and Nguyen (6-1).

Central Valley's two doubles teams combined to lose four times.

Jasmine Martinez and Lizette Covarrubias fell 10-0 to Stephanie Vanni and Jena Anderson, and 10-3 to Kayla Erion and Mary Ann Baker.

The No. 2 doubles tandem of Eva Noorzai and Taylor Rogers was defeated by Erion and Baker (10-0), and Vanni and Anderson (10-2).

"Their scores might not show it, but our doubles teams have definitely improved since the start of the season," Hawn said. "That's a bonus."

With the loss, Central Valley dropped to 1-3 in the VOL standings.

Sierra improved to 1-2 in conference play.
