Elisha Ferguson, Meghan Franksen, Jessica Hunter, Crystal Goblirsch, Myrna Cadenas, Kristen McClure, Robin Hunter and Chelsea Keidel were recognized by their coaches Thursday afternoon at the Ceres High volleyball award banquet. The one-hour ceremony was held in a classroom after school.
With Ferguson, Franksen and Jessica Hunter leading the way, the varsity Bulldogs finished fourth in the Modesto Metro Conference with a 7-8 record and secured a berth in the postseason for the first time in five years. Ceres upset Benicia 3-0 in the first round of the playoffs.
Franksen, a first-team, all-MMC selection, won the Defensive Most Valuable Player award. The senior had 168 kills, 228 digs, 51 aces and served 93 percent (287 out of 309) for the season.
"She was the leader in the league in passing and digging," said Ceres coach Sue Garcia.
Ferguson, a second-team, all-league selection, won the Offensive Most Valuable Player award. The senior had 431 assists, 191 digs, 52 aces and served 90 percent (269 out of 295) for the season.
"She was always hustling on the court and was one of the top setters in the league," Garcia said. "She was one of the top diggers on our team too."
Jessica Hunter won the Most Improved Player award. The junior had 54 kills and nine blocks.
"She really was an asset when we played against the best teams," Garcia.
Crystal Goblirsch won the Coaches award. The junior never missed practice and provided plenty of encouragement from the bench.
"She was always there," Garcia said.
Sophomore Myrna Cadenas and freshman Kaylee Brown, co-captains of the JV squad, shared the Coaches award.
"They led by example," said Ceres coach Kassi Baker.
Sophomore Kristen McClure won the Most Improved Player award.
"She didn't really play a lot at the beginning of the year," Baker said. "Towards the end of the season, she started."
