Central Valley High School's fall sports programs held their first official practices this past week.

"It went really well," said Jeff Rocchi, Central Valley athletic director.

The Hawks field 11 teams, including varsity girls tennis, varsity girls golf, JV cheerleading, JV dance, frosh-soph boys cross country, frosh-soph girls cross country, frosh-soph boys soccer, sophomore football, sophomore volleyball, freshman football and freshman volleyball.

Roland Calagos, Mike Holliday, Linda Lima, Jennifer Gordon, Sirena Alvarez, Jaime Sanchez, Tim Garcia and Denise Runyan coach tennis, golf, cheerleading, dance, cross country, soccer, football and volleyball, respectively.

About 16 students signed up for tennis.

"We had a very good turnout," Calagos said.

Practice was held on Thursday and Friday.

"We worked on the basic strokes, backhand and forehand, and went over scoring," Calagos said. "We still have a lot of work to do."

Calagos will make final cuts this week.

More than 15 students signed up for golf.

"I never expected to have this particular problem," Holliday said. "I'm not looking forward to making cuts."

Holliday held one-hour practices in his classroom on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

"Almost all of them are complete beginners," Holliday said. "We're going over the basics, like golf etiquette, grip on the club and putting stroke."

All of Central Valley's teams compete in the Valley Oak League except for football. The sophomore and freshman football squads have 10-game, independent schedules.

The sophomore team will face Cesar Chavez, Pleasant Grove, Ronald McNair, Liberty, East Union and Ripon Christian high schools. The Hawks play Cesar Chavez, Pleasant Grove, Ronald McNair and Liberty twice.

The freshmen team will battle Cesar Chavez, Pleasant Grove, Ronald McNair, Liberty, East Union and Vacaville Christian. They also play Cesar Chavez, Pleasant Grove, Ronald McNair and Liberty twice.
