Hawks sweep Raiders

Central Valley's varsity boys and girls swim teams posted victories over Western Athletic Conference rival Central Catholic last week.

"Everybody's excited," Hawks head coach Sarah Willems said.

Central Valley's boys dominated the Raiders 86-52 on Friday at Ceres High School.

The Hawks (1-3) had multiple contributors, including Chris Lugo, Jesse Magana, Benji Magana, Josue Hernandez, Austin McAleavey, Braden Rambo, Louis Gonzales, Thomas Rogers and Sam Gaede.

Central Valley is no longer winless.

"It boosts their confidence a little bit," Willems said. "It was nice competing against a team with similar numbers."

Lugo placed first in the 100 free and 100 breast.

Jesse Magana placed first in the 200 free.

Benji Magana placed first in the 50 free.

Hernandez placed second in the 200 free and 100 free.

McAleavey placed second in the 50 free.

Rambo placed second in the 500 free and 100 breast.

Gonzales placed third in the 100 free and 100 back.

Rogers placed third in the 50 free and 100 breast.

The 200 medley relay team of Gonzales, Lugo, Benji Magana and McAleavey placed first.

The 200 medley relay team of Jesse Magana, Rogers, Gaede and Rambo placed third.

The 200 free relay team of Gaede, Lugo, Benji Magana and McAleavey placed first.

The 200 free relay team of Jesse Magana, Rogers, Hernandez and Rambo placed second.

The 400 free relay team of Benji Magana, Jesse Magana, Gaede and McAleavey placed first.

Every point mattered during the Central Valley-Central Catholic girls dual meet.

The Hawks emerged with a hard-fought 74-73 win.

Central Valley (2-2) trailed 69-66 entering the final race.

The Hawks' 400 free relay team, which consisted of Clarissa Lopez, Stephanie Navarro, Kat Rambo and Melissa Amezcua, secured the victory with a first-place finish.

"That's what it came down to," Willems said. "I'm not surprised. They're all pretty strong swimmers."

Taylor Rogers won the 50 free and 100 free.

Cierra Alvear won the 200 IM and 100 breast.

Savanna Alvear placed first in the 100 back and second in the 50 free.

Amezcua placed second in the 100 free.

Victoria Gutierrez placed third in the 50 free.

Navarro placed fourth in the 100 breast.

Lopez placed fifth in the 100 free.

Central Valley will compete at Ceres High on Thursday (3:30 p.m.).

"We'll be swimming against similar talent," Willems said. "Hopefully, we'll get good results."
