Central Valley’s boys cross country program edged crosstown-rival Ceres High by just five points, 142-147, during the Western Athletic Conference’s Second Cluster Meet of the 2025 season on Oct. 1 at Ceres River Bluff Regional Park.

The Hawks and Bulldogs placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the team standings behind Beyer (29), Livingston (80), Pacheco (84), Lathrop (119) and Johansen (132).

Grace Davis (200) finished last.

“To be able to beat Ceres High is a plus,” Central Valley head coach Horacio Garcia said. “But to be honest, we’re just focusing on ourselves right now. We’re looking to improve individually and as a team.”

Enoc Reyes was Central Valley’s top finisher.

He took 18th with a personal-best time of 18 minutes, 51 seconds on the 3.1-mile course.

Reyes broke the 19-minute mark for the first time.

“He performed really well,” Garcia said. “He’s never absent from practice. His work ethic is top-notch.”

Carlos Castaneda (19:06), Frankie Klino (19:15), Jayden Pires (19:52) and Jayden Rodriguez (20:29) placed 26th, 30th, 37th and 47th, respectively, while contributing to the Hawks’ point total.

Central Valley’s Alejandro Rodriguez (20:29) was 48th.

Castaneda, Klino, Pires, Jayden Rodriguez and Alejandro Rodriguez also ran their personal-best times at River Bluff.

“That’s a result of how much work the kids have put in in recent weeks,” Garcia said.

Sergio Torres led Ceres High.

He took 15th with a time of 18:28.

Andres Marcial (19:01), Nickolas Albiani (19:50), Josiah Martinez-Gontiz (20:04) and Elijah Villamarin (21:00) placed 21st, 35th, 41st and 50th, respectively, while contributing to the Bulldogs’ point total.

Ceres High’s Anthony Savala Alvarez (21:34) and Erick Henry (22:19) placed 53rd and 58th, respectively.

CV girls fifth

Central Valley’s girls posted a team score of 112 en route to a last-place finish at the WAC’s Second Cluster Meet this past week in Ceres.

Crosstown-rival Ceres High didn’t post a team score due to a lack of numbers.

“We have a really young team,” Garcia said. “I’m not focusing on our place. I just wanted to get a team out there. We’re seeing improvement from the entire team.”

Mia Muniz led the Hawks.

The sophomore took 15th with a personal-best time of 23 minutes, 59 seconds on the 3.1-mile course.

She broke the 24-minute barrier for the first time.

“She’s very competitive,” Garcia said. “She asks for advice on how to get better. That is needed in cross country.”

Muniz was a late addition to the team.

She’s also playing girls flag football this fall.

“I’m really happy she decided to help us out,” Garcia said.

Karen Magallon (25:45), Simran Bain (26:36), McKenzy Crane (28:38) and Courtney Crane (34:38) placed 21st, 26th, 29th and 36th while contributing to Central Valley’s point total.

Muniz, Magallon, Bain, McKenzy Crane and Courtney Crane all set personal records.

“Everyone on the team PR’d, which is nice to see,” Garcia said.

Clarissa Rivera led the shorthanded Bulldogs.

She took 13th (28:00).

Ceres High’s Marissa Pacheco (27:16) and Isabella Sabala (29:00) placed 27th and 30th, respectively.

CV frosh-soph boys win

Isaiah Ruiz, Diego Gutierrez, Armando Gutierrez, Jose Mendoza-Comparan and Javier Contreras helped lead Central Valley’s frosh-soph boys team to a first-place finish at the WAC’s Second Cluster Meet.

The Hawks posted a team score of 31 on their way to finishing ahead of Beyer (65), Lathrop (100), Livingston (111), Johansen (113), Ceres High (139) and Grace Davis (152).

Central Valley also took first during the WAC’s First Cluster Meet. Central Valley edged Beyer by just three points (51-54).

“I’m very excited about the future,” Garcia said. “I’m lucky there’s a lot of talent.”

Ruiz paced Central Valley.

He took first with a time of 11 minutes, 34 seconds on the 2.1-mile course.

“It’s his first year running cross country,” Garcia said. “He’s just a natural talent.”
