Central Valley girls lose to Los Banos, Patterson

Central Valley High School's new-look varsity girls tennis team lost 8-1 to both Los Banos and Patterson during the opening week of the Western Athletic Conference season.

"We lost 10 starters to graduation," head coach Mike Rodriguez said. "We're rebuilding. We've shown some improvement already."

The Hawks dropped five of six singles and all three doubles matches while competing against Patterson on Thursday.

Ali Martinez accounted for Central Valley's lone victory.

Martinez defeated Ashley Afalla 6-0, 6-3 in No. 4 singles play.
Emely Amaya lost 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 to Kelby Norfleet in No. 1 singles play.

Naomi Torres lost 6-1, 6-1 to Kendal Norfleet in No. 2 singles play.

Jadah Jackson lost 6-1, 6-3 to Avery Chairez in No. 3 singles play.

Sandra Luna lost 6-0, 6-4 to Keanna Garza in No. 5 singles play.

Claudia Martinez lost 6-1, 6-3 to Lucero Vargas in No. 6 singles play.

Teresa Diaz and Vanessa Monroy lost 7-5, 6-1 to Antonia Perez and Santana Mata in No. 1 doubles play.

Samantha Sotomayor and Princess Pe lost 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 to Arianna Rico and Ngoc in No. 2 doubles play.

Chelsea Flores and Ayme Nguyen lost 1-6, 6-1, 10-3 to Catarina Borges and Wendy Zuelta in No. 3 doubles play.

The Hawks won one of six singles and no doubles matches versus reigning WAC champion Los Banos on Sept. 10 in Ceres.

Ali Martinez, Central Valley's No. 3 singles player, prevented the shutout.

Elena Erreca, Martinez's opponent, retired due to illness.

Ali won the first set, 7-6 (8-6), and held a 3-1 lead when Elena opted to forfeit.

Amaya lost 6-0, 6-1 to Nicole Marchese in No. 1 singles play.

Jackson lost 6-0, 6-0 to Jacquelin Arretche in No. 2 singles play.

Luna lost 6-1, 6-0 to Monique Arretche in No. 4 singles play.

Claudia Martinez lost 6-0, 6-0 to Bianca Soares in No. 5 singles play.

Diaz lost 6-3, 6-0 to Taylor Harris in No. 6 singles play.

Sotomayor and Pe lost 6-0, 6-1 to Marelee Garcia and Amanda Marchese in No. 1 doubles play.

Flores and Monroy lost 6-1, 6-0 to Melanie Silva and Kylee Cardoza in No. 2 doubles play.

Nguyen and Navpreet Bains lost 6-0, 6-0 to Kailyn Neves and Cailey Corral in No. 3 doubles play.

"We played alright," Rodriguez said. "For most of the girls, it was their first and second matches."
