Central Valley girls tennis remains unbeaten in league

Central Valley’s girls tennis team has won 21 consecutive league matches dating back to the 2024 season.

The Hawks extended their run of dominance versus Western Athletic Conference competition last week by topping Beyer and Pacheco.

Central Valley improved to 12-1 overall and 9-0 in the WAC standings.

“The girls never talk about it, head coach Nimrat Chahal said while answering questions about the Hawks’ unbeaten streak in league play. “They’re having fun. They’re trying to get better. Our girls are committed.”

Central Valley bested Beyer 9-0 on Oct. 9 in Modesto.

The Hawks swept all six singles and doubles matches versus the Patriots.

Aleena Higle topped Milla Pineda 6-3, 6-3 in No. 1 singles play.

Harkiran Sandhu topped Fernanda Perez 6-4, 6-2 in No 2 singles play.

Valerie Espinoza topped Jillian Smart 6-1, 6-0 in No. 3 singles play

Serath Birring topped Miriam Alwalkeel 6-1, 6-1 in No. 4 singles play.

Roxana Orozco topped Eviana Butler 6-3, 4-6, 10-3 in No. 5 singles play.

Genesis Velazquez Pedraza topped Abby Edvalson 6-0, 6-1 in No. 6 singles play.

Valeria Sanchez Luna and Selena Cubillo topped Dahlia Garcia and Grace Pifer 2-6, 6-3, 10-4 in No. 1 doubles play.

Illyana Vidal and Emily Carranza topped Malika Sherifi and Marelyn Ochoa 6-2, 6-3 in No. 2 doubles play.

Samantha Sarabia Zavala and Yahiza Bustos topped Lulabelle Morrison and Ava Lorenzo 6-2, 6-2 in No. 3 doubles play.

Central Valley rolled to an 8-1 win over Pacheco on Oct. 7 in Ceres.

The Hawks won all six singles and two of three doubles matches against the Panthers.

Higle prevailed 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 versus Angela Gomez-Vega in No. 1 singles play.

Sandhu prevailed 6-3, 6-4 versus Samantha Ceja in No. 2 singles play.

Aaliyah Jauregui prevailed 6-0, 6-1 versus Melodie Morales in No. 3 singles play.

Espinoza prevailed 6-0, 6-0 in No. 4 singles play.

Birring prevailed 6-2, 6-1 versus Janice Diaz in No. 5 singles play

Orozco prevailed 6-3, 6-1 versus Aleyn Soto in No. 6 singles play.

Carranza and Natalia Campos prevailed 6-2, 6-1 versus Naomi Oro and Noemi Oviedo in No. 2 doubles play.

Sarabia Zavala and Bustos prevailed 6-4, 6-4 versus Isabella Garcia and Brilyn Iudice in No. 3 doubles play.

Sanchez Luna and Vidal lost 1-6, 6-3, 10-6 to Stacie Hernandez and Kimberly Celio in No. 1 doubles play.

The Hawks are vying for their second straight WAC title and Sac-Joaquin Section playoff berth.

Central Valley secured its first postseason victory in 2024.

“We have girls that have been in the program for a while,” Chahal said. “They show up for practice every day. They listen and try to get better. It’s a recipe for success.”

Bulldogs beaten

Ceres High’s girls tennis team dropped to 1-8 in the WAC standings this past week after losing to Lathrop and Johansen.

The Bulldogs lost 6-3 to the Lathrop Spartans on Oct. 9 in Ceres.

Alyson Brumbaugh, Kassandra Hernandez, Cazandra Fregoso and Aileen Rocha contributed to Ceres High’s point total.

Brumbaugh prevailed 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 in No. 2 singles play.

Hernandez prevailed 6-4, 6-0 in No. 4 singles play.

Fregoso and Rocha prevailed 6-0, 6-3 in No. 3 doubles play.

The Spartans earned a season sweep of the Bulldogs.

Lathrop won the first meeting, 7-2.

Ceres High sustained a 5-4 loss while competing against the Johansen Vikings on Oct. 7 in Modesto.

The Bulldogs won four of six singles matches.

Martinez Meglioli prevailed 6-3, 6-4 in No. 1 singles play.

Brumbaugh prevailed 6-1, 6-2 in No. 2 singles play.

Nerisha Singh prevailed 6-0, 6-3 in No. 3 singles play.

Hernandez prevailed 6-3, 6-3 in No. 4 singles play.

Ceres High edged Johansen 5-4 earlier this season.

WATER POLO

Ceres High’s boys and girls water polo teams competed against Johansen and Livingston last week.

Central Valley battled Pacheco and Grace Davis.

“I’ve seen so much growth, particularly from a lot of our young players, since the beginning of the season,” Ceres High girls head coach Emiliano Ortega said. 

Ceres High’s girls team dropped to 4-5 in the Western Athletic Conference standings following its 15-3 loss at Johansen on Oct. 8.

Layla Abraham, Jaelyn Silva and Heaven Vasquez all scored one goal in defeat.

Goalkeeper Jordan Applegate made five saves.

Host Ceres High edged Livingston 9-6 on Oct. 6.

Abraham tallied a team-high four goals.

Vasquez and Jessie Blevins both scored twice.

Silva added one goal.

Applegate had 10 blocks.

Central Valley’s girls team improved to 2-7 in the WAC after posting a 14-11 win over Pacheco on Oct. 8 in Ceres.

The Hawks lost 20-7 on the road to the Panthers on Sept. 15.

Lilyana Madrigal poured in a game-high nine goals during the rematch.

Audrey Rhinehart added two goals.

Dulce Renteria, Isabella Madrigal and Joellene Roton all contributed one goal.

Central Valley lost 20-7 at Grace Davis on Oct. 6.

Lilyana Madrigal accounted for all seven of the Hawks’ goals.

The Hawks and Spartans battled to a 4-4 tie in the opening period.

Grace Davis outscored Central Valley 16-3 the rest of the game.

Ceres High’s boys team dropped to 1-8 in the WAC after falling 8-5 at Johansen on Oct. 8.

Jaxon Merrill led the Bulldogs in scoring with four goals.

Jesus Sanchez had one goal.

Elijah Rodriguez totaled 10 saves at goalkeeper.

Ceres High suffered an 18-11 loss against visiting Livingston on Oct. 6.

Merrill and Abel Samaniego both scored a team-high four goals.

Rodriguez collected three goals.

He made one save.

Central Valley’s boys team dropped to 2-7 in the WAC after losing 9-4 to Pacheco on Oct. 8 in Ceres.

Caleb Beckhart and Nick DeLeon each scored a team-high two goals versus the Panthers.

Central Valley stormed out to a 4-0 lead before losing 13-6 at Grace Davis on Oct. 6.

Beckhart tallied a team-high four goals. 

Ezekiel Castorena Manzo contributed two goals.
