Central Valley High School hosted both boys and girls wrestling tournaments this past month in Ceres.
Hawk and Ceres High Bulldog grapplers competed at both events, which featured over a combined 1,000 athletes from 35 different schools.
“It’s a lot bigger than it used to be,” said Rob Beckhart, tournament director and head coach of Central Valley’s boys program. “I’m really appreciative of the schools that come. It’s almost like a circus. We’re really at our capacity in terms of mat space. It’s a lot to manage.”
A total of 375 female grapplers from 37 different schools participated in the 2025 Women’s Havoc in the Hawksnest tournament on Nov. 21.
Giana Breshears and Alicia Espinoza led Central Valley’s varsity girls team.
Breshears compiled a 4-0 record en route to a first-place finish in the 140-pound weight class.
She collected wins against Edison Senior’s Amairani Gonzalez (technical fall, 17-2), Golden Valley’s Kaylee Miranda (technical fall, 17-2), Downey’s Kimberly Barrera (pin, 3:30) and Beyer’s Layla Giuntoli (technical fall, 20-1).
Espinoza placed first at 235 pounds..
She compiled a 4-0 record.
Espinoza collected wins against El Capitan’s Audrina Moreno (pin, 1:16), Johansen’s Ferrinahou Nuku (pin, 0:31), Ceres High’s Elizabeth Boyd (pin, 0:49) and Sierra’s Valeria Galvan (pin, 1:08).
Gabriella Cole, Abigail Schultz, Mezmeriah Zuniga and Elizabeth Boyd led Ceres High’s varsity girls team.
Cole placed first at 105 pounds.
She compiled a 2-0 record.
Cole collected a pair of wins against El Capitan’s Eliza Gutierrez (pin, 3:33/pin, 0:50).
Schultz placed second at 135 pounds.
She compiled a 2-1 record.
Schultz collected wins against Edison Senior’s Rosy Hernandez (pin, 4:53) and Beyer’s Ayla Hernandez-Chavez (pin, 0:44).
Zuniga placed third at 140 pounds.
She compiled a 4-1 record.
Zuniga collected wins against Pitman’s Natalia Rangel (pin, 4:34), Ripon’s Riya Pearson (pin, 4:25), Buhach Colony’s McKenna Hill (pin, 0:54) and Downey’s Kimberly Barrera (pin, 1:57).
Boyd placed third at 235 pounds.
She compiled a 4-1 record.
Boyd collected a pair of wins against Hilmar’s Arely Ambriz (decision, 4-0/pin, 1:59).
She also bested Atwater’s Vyonnie Chavez twice (pin, 4:54/pin, 1:16).
Alexyia Garcia, Divina Velasquez, Giselle De La Torre and Davianna Marron, led Central Valley’s JV girls team.
Garcia (101-102s) placed first with a 3-0 record.
Velasquez (102-103s, 3-0) placed first.
De La Torre (149-154s, 3-0) placed first.
Marron (153-158s, 2-1) placed first.
Lilly Louis, Avril Gaona, Abrianna Bautista, Amelie Franco, Camila Alfaro and Alana Festa led Ceres High’s JV girls team.
Louis (91-93s) placed first with a 3-0 record.
Gaona (95-96s, 3-0) placed first.
Bautista (104s, 3-0) placed first.
Franco (136-137s, 3-0) placed first.
Alfaro (140-141s, 3-0) placed first.
Festa (187-195s. 3-0) placed first.
The 2025 Central Valley Boys Tournament was staged on Nov. 22.
The event had two divisions, including junior varsity and novice.
“Our kids won more matches than they lost,” Beckhart said. “They’re grasping the concepts and working hard.”
Victor Altamirano, Alan Soto, Breighdon Swenson, Carlos Gonzalez, Donavin Decena, Dylan Woodard and Enrique Zavala led Central Valley’s JV team.
Altamirano (190-193s) placed first with a 3-0 record.
Soto (136-139s, 2-1) placed second.
Swenson (126-129s, 2-1) placed third.
Gonzalez (140-143s, 2-1) placed third.
Decena (164-168s, 2-1) placed third.
Woodard (184-198s, 2-1) placed third.
Zavala (204-207s, 2-1) placed third.
Daniel Tubera, Dakota Pickett, Anthony Aldana, Isai Medina and Mateo Leones led Ceres High’s JV boys team.
Tubera (141-144s) placed first with a 3-0 record.
Pickett (152-156s, 2-1) placed second.
Aldana (130-131s, 2-1) placed third.
Medina (172-174s, 2-1) placed third.
Leones (200-213s, 2-1) placed third.
Isreal Garcia, Killian Jones, Tony Millan and Benjamin Cabral led Central Valley’s novice boys team.
Garcia (117-120s) placed first with a 3-0 record.
