Ceres High girls track and field team tops Patterson, boys suffer narrow defeat

The Ceres High-Patterson varsity track and field dual meets were decided by a combined five points on April 1 at Bulldog Stadium.

"It was so close," Ceres High head coach Brett Johnson said. "We double-checked everything to make sure there were no mistakes in scoring."

The Bulldogs won the girls competition by the slimmest of margins, 64-63.

Second-place Ceres High improved to 2-1 in the Western Athletic Conference standings.

Azia Brewster placed first in the high jump and 100 hurdles.

Mallynda Benjamin placed first in the 200 and 100.

Yasmine Cordova placed first in the 400.

Sydney Elness placed first in the triple jump and third in the long jump.

Haleigh Leazer placed first in the 800 and second in the 1,600.

Kaylee Holloway placed second in the 400 and 300 hurdles.

Ashlee Stiles placed second in the 800.

Destiny Adams placed third in the 400 and 200.

Lili Ochoa placed third in the 3,200.

Jovenpreet Gill placed third in the 1,600.

Saray Gonzalez placed third in the discus.

Nichole Parker placed third in the shot put.

Ceres High's 4x100 relay team of Brewster, Benjamin, Claudia Jimenez and Destiny Adams placed first.

"We performed well in a lot of areas," Johnson said.

Ceres High's boys suffered a hard-fought 70-66 loss.

The Bulldogs (2-1) dropped to second place in the WAC standings.

Tristan Dray placed first in the high jump, 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles.

Conner Johnson placed second in the discus and shot put.

Veeti Partanen placed first in the shot put.

Ulises Diaz placed first in the 400.

Seth Gibson placed second in the long jump, 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles.

Johnni Smith-Willis placed second in the 200.

Marcellus Boykins placed first in the long jump, second in the triple jump and third in the 400.

Isaac Leon placed second in the 1,600, and third in the 3,200 and 800.

Myron Sichanpheng placed third in the triple jump.

Blake Tobler placed third in the discus.

Luis Calderon placed third in the shot put.

Ceres High's 4x400 relay team of Dray, Gibson, Smith-Willis and Diaz placed first.

"I knew it would be really close," Johnson said. "Patterson has a solid team."

Ceres High will compete at crosstown-rival Central Valley today at 3:30 p.m.
