Central Valley’s girls flag football team exacted revenge against Beyer and topped Pacheco for the second time this past week.
Ceres High earned a series sweep of Lathrop and Johansen.
“We’re peaking at the right time,” Hawks’ leader Tony Cordova said. “We need to win the rest of our games to have a shot at (winning) league.”
Central Valley escaped with a 12-6 victory against Beyer on Oct. 8 in Modesto.
The Hawks avenged a 32-12 loss.
“The kids were focused and motivated,” Cordova said.
Central Valley (12-7, 7-3) climbed to second place in the Western Athletic Conference standings.
Beyer (8-6, 6-4) dropped to third place.
The Hawks have won their last four games.
“We have the right personnel in the right spots,” Cordova said. “It’s been fun to see them develop and get better.”
“I knew this team had potential,” he added. “I am surprised at how they’re adapting to the pressure.”
Central Valley quarterback Abigail Krauss completed 16 of 26 passes for 159 yards with two touchdowns and one interception versus Beyer.
“She’s getting better every game,” Cordova said.
Ayleen Apreza caught three passes for 45 yards and one touchdown. She also ran for 25 yards on six carries.
Jocelyn Rivera caught two passes for 23 yards and one touchdown. She totaled 20 yards on seven carries.
Jazmin Carmona caught seven passes for 51 yards.
Mia Muniz caught three passes for 23 yards.
Sophia Alvarez had three tackles and one sack on defense.
Alicia Espinoza had two tackles and one interception.
Airieana Martinez had two tackles and one pass deflection.
Dulce Del Valle, Giana Breshears and Alicia Torres collected seven, six and four tackles, respectively.
Led by Espinoza and Del Valle, Central Valley limited Beyer standout quarterback Heaven Oliver to just one rushing touchdown during last week’s game.
She had four touchdowns, including three passing, in the Patriots’ 32-12 blowout of the Hawks on Sept. 15.
“We were prepared,” Cordova said. “We locked her down.”
Central Valley held on for a 25-19 win over Pacheco on Oct. 6 at CUSD Stadium.
The Hawks built a commanding 25-6 lead in the opening half.
“We throttled down (in the second half),” Cordova said. “We weren’t as aggressive. We needed to keep our foot on the gas a little more.”
Krauss totaled 124 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions.
She completed 18 of her 26 pass attempts.
She also gained 32 yards on six carries.
Apreza caught four passes for 39 yards and one touchdown and ran for 52 yards on seven carries.
Carmona carried the ball three times for 32 yards and one touchdown.
Ruby Medina rushed for 15 yards and one touchdown on three carries.
Muniz added 46 yards on eight carries.
Rivera gained 60 yards on eight carries.
Breshears had five tackles and three sacks while starring on defense.
Apreza had three interceptions.
Alvarez had five tackles, one sack and one pass deflection.
Espinoza had three tackles and one interception.
Martinez had five tackles.
“Everybody was making plays,” Cordova said.
Ceres High remained in first place in the WAC standings after edging out host Lathrop 26-20 on Oct. 8 and cruising to a 42-13 road win over Johansen on Oct. 6.
The Bulldogs improved to 12-7 overall and 8-2 in the conference standings.
Ceres High defeated Johansen 60-6 and Lathrop 20-14 during the first half of the WAC season.
The Bulldogs have won their last three games since losing 31-28 to Central Valley.
Ceres High’s Presley Vierra passed for 347 yards during Ceres High’s rematch against Lathrop.
Sovannary Carter totaled 142 yards and three touchdowns.
Jayden Garcia had 58 yards and one touchdown.
Maria Bravo and Gabby Ortiz both had one interception on defense.
Vierra threw for 344 yards against Johansen last week.
Lilly Staggs had 98 yards and three touchdowns.
Garcia had 116 yards and one touchdown.
Gabriela Cole had 40 yards and one touchdown.
Amaia Pritchett had 10 yards and one touchdown.
Staggs collected one sack and one interception on defense.
Brisa Juarez intercepted one pass.
