CHS girls, CV boys improve to 4-0 in WAC duals

Central Valley’s boys and girls wrestling programs grappled Western Athletic Conference-opponents Johansen and Livingston last week. 

Ceres High’s girls and boys teams faced off against Grace Davis and Pacheco.

Central Valley’s boys team improved to 18-1 overall and 4-0 in the WAC dual standings with a 62-18 win over Johansen on Senior Night on Thursday.

The first-place Hawks won 11 of 14 individual matches versus the second-place Vikings (3-1).

Alijah Jackson prevailed by pin (0:21) against Jackson Mitchell at 106 pounds.

Sal Almazan prevailed by pin (1:06) against Ernesto Rodriguez at 285 pounds.

Isreal Garcia prevailed by pin (1:14) against Lavon Mitchell at 113 pounds.

Sean Vernon prevailed by pin (1:14) against Presley Leng Chea at 165 pounds.

Breighdon Swenson prevailed by pin (1:16) against Jesse Fabiel Alvarado at 126 pounds.

Caleb Beckhart prevailed by pin (2:30) against Gavin Herndon at 144 pounds.

Emilio Castillo prevailed by pin (2:39) against Rances Barlandas at 120 pounds.

Rotceh Mendez prevailed by pin (2:59) against Isaac Alvarez at 132 pounds.

Alicia Espinoza prevailed by pin (1:23) against Ferrinahou Nuku at 235 pounds.

Micaela Maldonado prevailed by pin (2:20) against Toya Leota at 190 pounds.

Giselle De La Torre prevailed by pin (5:05) against Hannah Hernandez at 155 pounds.

Mekenzie Buenrostro prevailed by major decision (15-5) against Dahlia Lucero at 120 pounds.

Evalyn Zambrano prevailed by decision (8-4) against Kayla Hernandez at 130 pounds.

Central Valley lost 54-30 to Livingston on Jan. 13

The Hawks won five of 14 individual matches versus the Wolves first-place Wolves (4-0).

Joselyn Alvarez prevailed by pin (0:32) against Valeria Ybarra at 100 pounds.

Leslie Hernandez prevailed by pin (0:52) against Andrea Quintero at 170 pounds.

Giana Breshears prevailed by pin (1:29) against Nayeli Mujica at 140 pounds.

Maldonado prevailed by pin (3:26) against Alexcya Hurtado at 190 pounds.

Ceres High’s girls team kept its perfect record intact against WAC competition.

The Bulldogs (4-0) remained in a first-place tie atop the league standings following Thursday’s 66-18 rout of fourth-place Grace Davis (1-3) at Phil de la Porte Gymnasium.

“It’s the best start we’ve had since I started coaching here,” head coach Curtis Hulstine said. “I’m really proud of the girls. We have a nice mix of veterans and young wrestlers. We just have to stay healthy and continue to wrestle well.”

Ceres High posted a 42-24 victory over fourth-place Pacheco (1-3) on Jan. 13 in Los Banos.

“It was nice to get the win even though we didn’t wrestle our best,” Hulstine said.

Ceres High’s boys team lost 62-15 to Grace Davis.

The fourth-place Bulldogs dropped to 1-3 in the WAC standings.

The first-place Spartans improved to 4-0.

Ceres High earned a hard-fought 48-36 win while competing against last-place Pacheco (0-4).


ROAD SUCCESS

Central Valley’s boys wrestling program experienced success in Watsonville earlier this month.

Ceres High competed in Sacramento last month.

“I’m proud of them,” Hawks’ head coach Rob Beckhart said. “We’re trying to get out there and get tested.”

The Hawks totaled 154.5 points while finishing in fifth place at the Apple Cider Classic on Jan. 10

The tournament featured 51 teams.

“Our goal was to place in the top 10,” Beckhart said. “It’s not an easy tournament.”

Central Valley’s Sal Almazan, Sunny Breshears, Caleb Beckhart, Urijah Krigbaum, Rotceh Mendez and Emilio Castillo all claimed individual medals after placing in the top six in their respective weight brackets.

Almazan took second with a 4-1 record at 285 pounds.

Breshears took fourth with a 4-2 record at 157 pounds.

Beckhart took fifth with a 4-2 record at 144 pounds.

Krigbaum took fifth with a 4-2 record at 138 pounds.

Mendez took fifth with a 5-1 record at 132 pounds.

Castillo took sixth with a 3-2 record at 120 pounds.

Central Valley bested four of five opponents en route to finishing second overall at the Apple Cider Duals on Jan. 9.

The Hawks claimed a team trophy.

“Right now, they’re wrestling with a lot of confidence,” coach Beckhart said. “They’re growing together and learning.”

Central Valley collected wins against Alisal (53-30), Abraham Lincoln (56-23), North Salinas (77-60) and Paso Robles (55-17).

The Hawks had their 16-match dual winning streak snapped by Central of Fresno in the finals.

Central Valley suffered a 46-36 loss.

Parker Borges, Anthony Aldana, Hunter Hammons, Mateo Leones, Jaden Silva, Daniel Tubera and Adamir Jimenez suited up for Ceres High at the Tim Brown Invitational, which was staged Dec. 9-10 at Sacramento Memorial Stadium.

Borges posted a 2-2 record at 144 pounds.

Aldana posted a 1-2 record at 126 pounds.

Hammons posted an 0-2 record at 285 pounds.

Leones posted an 0-2 record at 190 pounds.

Silva posted an 0-2 record at 175 pounds.

Tubera posted an 0-2 record at 138 pounds.

Jimenez posted an 0-2 record at 113 pounds.

The Bulldogs placed 80th in the team standings with 10.5 points.
