CHS girls earn praise from coach

Ceres High’s shorthanded girls soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to four games in Western Athletic Conference play last week.

Central Valley won two of three league games.

“I couldn’t be more proud,” Bulldogs’ head coach Rudy Jimenez said. “The girls are holding their own with no subs. They don’t complain. They encourage each other.”

Ceres High improved to 3-7-2 overall and 2-1-2 in the WAC standings with a 2-2 tie with Grace Davis on Friday at CUSD Stadium.

“We had the ball so much,” Jimenez said. “Our shots weren’t going in.”

Sharryah Cabellos scored both of the Bulldogs’ goals.

Ceres High and Pacheco battled to a 1-1 tie on Thursday in Los Banos.

Cabellos accounted for the Bulldogs’ lone goal.

Panther goalkeeper Abigail Melo blocked a penalty kick late in the game.

The Bulldogs have lost five players since the start of the season, including three starters to club soccer.

Central Valley improved to 5-4-2 overall and 3-1-0 in the WAC with a 4-0 win over Johansen on Friday in Modesto.

Ashley Juarez tallied a team-high two goals for Central Valley.

Hawk teammates Bella Ayala and Ayleen Apreza both scored once.

Central Valley shut out Livingston 2-0 on Thursday at Ceres River Bluff Regional Park.

Ayala and Apreza accounted for both of the Hawks’ goals.

Central Valley lost 2-1 at Beyer on Jan. 6.

Juarez scored the Hawks’ lone goal.


BOYS SOCCER

Central Valley’s and Ceres High’s boys soccer teams both collected one win, one tie and one loss in WAC play this past week.

“It’s very disappointing,” Hawks’ head coach Horacio Garcia said. “We could have done better. We didn’t capitalize on our scoring opportunities.”

“The more games you play as a team, the better you get,” Bulldogs’ leader Gilbert Zamora said.

Central Valley dropped to 2-7-5 overall and 2-1-2 in league following Friday’s 1-0 loss to Johansen at Ceres River Bluff Regional Park.

The Hawks lost despite having 12 shots on goal.

Damian Tafolla led the Hawks with two goals.

Pires, Salvador Estrada, Miguel Gutierrez and Jose Mendoza Comparan all scored once.

Ceres High cruised to a 6-1 victory over Grace Davis on Friday at Mary Grogan Community Park.

Leo Baez led the Bulldogs with two goals.

Estevan Diaz, Gabriel Farias and David Tapia all contributed one goal.

Ceres High snapped a three-game losing streak with a 1-1 draw versus Pacheco on Thursday at CUSD Stadium.

Baez notched the Bulldogs’ lone goal.

Diaz scored one goal during Ceres High’s 2-1 loss at Lathrop on Jan. 6.
