CHS girls improve to 2-0 in WAC

Ceres High’s varsity girls tennis team topped Beyer and Lathrop during the opening week of the Western Athletic Conference season.

“I’m not really surprised because I’ve been working them pretty hard at practice,” head coach David Ortiz said.

The Bulldogs improved to 2-0 in the WAC standings with a 6-3 win over Beyer on Thursday in Modesto.

Ceres High swept all three doubles and won three of six singles matches versus Beyer.

Monica Esparza and Mercedez Wood bested Noelle Martin and Gracie Roberts 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 in No. 1 doubles play.

Liesha Jimenez and Evelin Guardado bested Jordan Hodges and Hailey Salha 6-2, 6-0 in No. 2 doubles play.

Pamelina Lo and Yesenia Mendoza bested Patricia Trevillyan and Saral Alwakeel 6-0, 6-1 in No. 3 doubles play.

Tania Garfias bested Cynthia Madrigal 6-4, 6-3 in No. 1 singles play.

Jillian Jimenez bested Alexis Lara 6-4, 7-5 in No. 2 singles play.

Gurmen Bahia bested Rayana Arellano 7-5, -3 in No. 4 singles play.

Gurmannet Bahia lost 6-1, 6-3 to Zoey Moffit in No. 3 singles play.

Christel Ontiveros lost 6-3, 6-1 to Mary Ruettermann in No. 5 singles play.

Mahnoor Kahloon lost 6-1, 7-5 to Camille Cortez in No. 6 singles play.

Ceres High’s No. 1 doubles team and No. 2 singles player both rallied from deficits.

“We would have lost 5-4 if they didn’t win,” Ortiz said. 

Ceres High defeated visiting Lathrop 6-3 on Sept. 9.

The Bulldogs took all three doubles and three of six singles matches from the Spartans.

“I’m happy with how they did,” Ortiz said. “They followed the game plan. We played to the other team’s weak spots.”

Kahloon and Esparza bested Amanda Fernandez and Shania Leyva 7-5, 2-6, 10-5 in No. 1 doubles play.

Guardado and Lo bested Vanessa Laoeng and Maria Chavez 6-0, 6-0 in No. 3 doubles play.

Wood and Jimenez bested Holly Rivera and Ruby Chavez by medical default at No. 2 doubles play.

Jasmine Bahia bested Tammy Pham 6-1, 6-2 in No. 4 singles play.

Gurmen Bahia bested Kimberly Bareng 4-6, 6-0, 7-5 in No. 5 singles play.

Ontiveros bested Jocelyn Lat 6-1, 6-0 in No. 6 singles play.

Garfias lost 6-4, 7-5 to Darlene Hoang in No. 1 singles play.

Jimenez lost 6-1, 6-3 to Bernice Anne Vilches in No. 2 singles play.

Gurmannet Bahia lost 6-1, 6-2 to Harman Garcha in No. 3 singles play.

The Bulldogs are competing with a revamped starting lineup this fall.

Ceres High lost five of its top six singles players to graduation.

“I have girls that have never touched a tennis racquet before,” Ortiz said. “I have to mold them.”

CV secures split

Central Valley’s varsity girls tennis team broke into the Central California Conference win column this past week after topping one of its two opponents.

The Hawks (1-4) ended a three-match losing streak with an 8-1 victory over Livingston on Sept. 10 in Ceres.

Virginia Moore bested April Rosales 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 in No. 2 singles play.

Christina Hermenegildo bested Monica Maldonado 6-0, 6-0 in No. 3 singles play.

Sadie Porras bested Jenny Garcia 6-1, 6-1 in No. 4 singles play.

Cassandra Leon bested Emily Molina 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 in No. 5 singles play.

Edith Amaya bested Stefanie Ramos 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in No. 6 singles play.

Sabina Dhillon and Natalia Rubio bested Cynthia Garcia and Natalie Briones 6-1, 6-4 in No. 1 doubles play.

Ashley Corro and Jessica Saini bested Jennifer Lozano and Maria Robles 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 7-6 (11-9) in No. 2 doubles play.

Alicia Sanchez and Malina Keomuangchanh lost 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) to Angela Perez and Karina Verduzco in No. 3 doubles play.

Host Central Valley fell 7-2 to Golden Valley on Sept. 12.
