Central Valley’s boys tennis team is inching closer to accomplish a first in program history.

The Hawks improved to 11-0 overall and 10-0 in the Western Athletic Conference standings this past week after winning a pair of matches on the road.

“They guys understand they’re in a position to do what’s never been done before, which is win league,” head coach Nimrat Chahal said. “They know what’s at stake. They know what they’re playing for.”

Central Valley shut out Grace Davis 9-0 on April 2 in Modesto.

“We did what we were supposed to do,” Chahal said.

The Hawks swept all six singles and three double matches versus the Spartans.

Avori Ortega prevailed 6-2, 6-4 in No. 1 singles play.

Roman Parodi prevailed 6-0, 6-3 in No. 2 singles play.

Silas Rodriguez prevailed 6-2, 6-3 in No. 3 singles play.

Osvaldo Cisneros prevailed 6-1, 7-5 in No. 4 singles play.

Alex Aguilar prevailed 6-3, 6-4 in No. 5 singles play.

Jaylan Tagadaya prevailed by forfeit in No. 6 singles play.

Josh Rubio and Abram Munguia prevailed 6-0, 6-2 in No. 1 doubles play.

Gurtaj Saran and Andrew Arevalo prevailed 6-0, 6-2 in No. 2 doubles play.

Simar Malhi and Sahib Patter prevailed 6-1, 6-1 in No. 3 doubles play.

Central Valley outlasted Beyer 6-3 on April 1 in Modesto.

“That’s the closest match we’ve had all season,” Chahal said. “All of the singles matches were pretty tight. Their singles players are really good. Our doubles are a big strength. They haven’t lost all year.”

The Hawks won all three doubles and three of six singles matches versus the Patriots.

Rubio and Munguia prevailed 6-2, 6-3 in No. 1 doubles play.

Saran and Arevalo prevailed 6-2, 6-3 in No. 2 doubles play.

Malhi and Patter prevailed 6-2, 6-2 in No. 3 doubles play.

Ortega prevailed 6-4, 6-4 in No. 1 singles play

Cisneros prevailed 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 in No. 4 singles play.

Aguilar prevailed 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (6-8), 6-1 in No. 5 singles play.

Parodi lost 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in No. 2 singles play.

Rodriguez lost 6-2, 6-4 in No. 3 singles play.

Tagadaya lost 6-3, 6-4 in No. 6 singles play.

Central Valley had high expectations heading into this season due to its experience.

The Hawks welcomed back 14 players from last year’s team, which finished fourth in the WAC standings (4-6).

Central Valley enjoyed its last winning campaign in 2022. The Hawks returned to the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs following a six-year absence, compiled an 8-5 overall record and won eight of 12 matches while placing third in the Central California Conference.

“I knew we were going to be pretty good,” Chahal said. “This group has been together for a few years. We have so many experienced players. They’re pretty dialed in. They’re playing for themselves and the team.”

BASEBALL

Central Valley’s first-place baseball team increased its lead to two games over second-place Ceres High in the Western Athletic Conference standings this past week.

The Hawks improved to 12-4 overall and 8-0 in the WAC following their sweep of Johansen.

The Bulldogs moved to 9-6 on the season and 6-2 in league play after splitting with Grace Davis.

“We’re handling business,” Central Valley head coach Brad Bussard said. “The biggest thing right now is our goal is to host a playoff game. We’re trying to get a higher seed. That’s been our motivation.”

The Hawks extended their winning streak to 10 games with a 12-0 win over the Vikings in five innings on April 2 in Ceres.

Central Valley collected 11 hits.

Ezequiel Verduzco batted 2-for-3 with two doubles, three RBIs and three runs.

Fernando Dominguez batted 2-for-2 with one double, one RBI and three runs.

Mason Whitworth batted 1-for-3 with one triple and three runs.

Whitworth, Dominic Delatorre, Isaias Valdovinos, Adrian Delahoya and Isaac Lopez all pitched one inning versus Johansen.

Whitworth and Delatorre both had two strikeouts.

Valdovinos and Lopez each had one strikeout.

Central Valley shut out Johansen 10-0 in five innings on April 2 in Ceres.

The Hawks totaled nine hits.

Whitworth batted 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs.

Dominguez batted 2-for-2 with two RBIs and one run.

Verduzco batted 1-for-2 with one double, two RBIs and one run.

Dominguez, Caden Mendonca, Tyson Hunt, Noah Maldonado and Adrian Vegaa all contributed at pitcher.

Mendonca had three strikeouts.

Dominguez had two strikeouts.

Hunt, Maldonado and Vega all had one strikeout.

Central Valley has won its last four league games by the mercy rule.

The Hawks have outscored conference opponents, 82-6.

“It’s always a good thing when we can get everybody into a game,” Bussard said. “Our roster is so deep. We’re able to pick each other up.”

Ceres High collected 14 hits during its 11-5 victory against Grace Davis on April 2 in Modesto.

Isaac Moreno batted 1-for-2 with three runs.

Isaiah Reyes batted 2-for-4 with two doubles and one run.

Anthony Trevino batted 3-for-5 with one run.

The Bulldogs lost 8-4 to the Spartans on March 31 at Art McRae Field.

Ceres High mustered just four hits.

Moreno batted 2-for-4 with one double and two RBIs.

Trevino, Steven Burciaga and Gabe Malagon all scored once.

Junior Sombrerero and Ashton Urena singled.
