Ceres High’s Parker Borges managed to claim the 145-pound title at the Western Athletic Conference Championships despite being slowed by an ankle injury.

Central Valley’s boys wrestling team made program history by placing first at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament for the second year in a row.

The Hawks piled up 228 points while finishing ahead of Grace Davis (196.5), Beyer (190), Lathrop (143.5), Livingston (137), Johansen (132.5), Ceres High (107) and Pacheco (99).

“We knew going into it, we were the favorites to win the tournament,” Central Valley head coach Rob Beckhart said. “There’s a lot of pressure that comes with that.”

“We did better than expected,” Ceres High leader Adam Borges said. “I’m pretty excited with how the kids performed. They wrestled tough.”

Central Valley’s Sal Almazan, Sunny Breshears, Emilio Castillo, Caleb Beckhart, Urijah Krigbaum, Breighdon Swenson, Alijah Jackson, Enrique Zavala, Rotceh Mendez, Sean Vernon and Isaac Davalos, and Ceres High’s Parker Borges, Isai Medina, Josiah Martinez and Anthony Aldana secured individual berths to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-IV Championships after finishing in the top four in their respective weight brackets at the WAC finals.

“I’m proud of them,” coach Beckhart said. “The results are from all the hard work and effort they’re putting in.”

Almazan claimed the 287-pound title with 3-0 record.

“Sal continues to work hard,” coach Beckhart said. “He has a lot more confidence. He’s figured out what works for him. He’s willing to take risks.”

Breshears claimed the 159-pound title with a 3-0 record.

“Sunny never quits,” Rob Beckhart said. “He keeps wrestling.”

Castillo claimed the 122-pound title with a 3-0 record.

“Emilio does the best he can do every time he wrestles,” coach Beckhart said. 

Caleb Beckhart finished second at 152 pounds.

He compiled a 2-1 record.

Krigbaum finished second at 140 pounds.

He compiled a 2-1 record.

Swenson finished second at 128 pounds.

He compiled a 2-1 record.

Jackson finished second at 108 pounds.

He compiled a 2-1 record.

Zavala finished third at 192 pounds.

He compiled 3-1 record. 

Mendez finished third at 134 pounds.

He compiled a 3-1 record. 

Vernon finished fourth at 167 pounds.

He compiled a 3-2 record.

Davalos finished fourth at 115 pounds.

He compiled a 3-2 record.

Parker Borges claimed the 146-pound title with a 2-0 record.

He was sidelined the previous week with an ankle injury.

He used a knee scooter to get around campus leading up to the tournament.

“Parker gutted it out,” coach Borges said. “Most kids would have quit.”

Medina finished fourth at 177 pounds.

He compiled a 3-2 record.

Martinez finished fourth at 152 pounds.

He compiled a 3-2 record.

Aldana finished fourth at 128 pounds.

He compiled a 3-2 record.

Central Valley’s Sergio Sanchez and Ceres High’s Hunter Hammons, Daniel Tubera, Lionel Villanueva and Elijah Villamarin were named alternates for Divisionals following their fifth-place showings at the league championships.

Sanchez compiled a 2-3 record at 146 pounds.

Hammons compiled a 2-3 record at 287 pounds.

“Hunter’s been a big part of our team,” coach Borges said.

Tubera compiled a 2-3 record at 140 pounds.

Villanueva compiled at 2-3 record at 108 pounds.

“I wish he would have wrestled like that all year long,” Adam Borges said.

Villamarin compiled a 2-3 record at 122 pounds.

Central Valley’s Killian Jones and Ceres High’s Adamir Jimenez both finished in sixth place.

Jones compiled a 1-3 record at 177 pounds.

Jimenez compiled a 1-3 record at 115 pounds.

Central Valley and Ceres High will compete at the Division-IV tournament this Saturday at Pacheco High School. 

The top four individuals in each weight class will qualify for Masters.
