Janita Vongphoumy has been named Modesto Junior College's top female golfer for the month of September.

The 2016 Central Valley High School graduate has helped the Pirates maintain a firm grip on second place in the Big-8 Conference standings.

"I'm extremely grateful getting this recognition," Vongphoumy said. "I've been working hard and try to do my best for my team and the school."

Vongphoumy played in five Big-8 matches last month.

She ranked third in conference scoring.

Janita shot a 75 at Ancil Hoffman Golf Course in Carmichael on Sept. 29.

"The most enjoyable part is being on a team again," she said. "We all have the potential to do a lot better. It's going to take more practice."

Vongphoumy had a memorable two-year career at Central Valley.

She was named Western Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player twice.

Janita placed first at the WAC year-end and mid-season tournaments during both of her seasons with the Hawks.

A two-time Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament qualifier, Vongphoumy bested all competitors while claiming the title at the Division-IV Championships as a senior.

Janita plans to transfer to Cal State Monterey Bay following her sophomore year at Modesto JC.

"The biggest challenge so far is keeping a balance between my school work and golf," she said. "I know there are so many opportunities that could come from me taking this (sport) seriously. I just need to focus on what I'm doing and not think too much."
