Central Valley’s and Ceres High’s girls basketball teams battled for bragging rights last week.

The Hawks upset the crosstown-rival Bulldogs 34-33 in front of their home fans Thursday evening.

“I’m really happy for our girls,” Central Valley head coach Derrick Goblirsch said. “It was a great team win. Everybody contributed. They beat a lot of teams that beat us in league. This should give us confidence moving forward.”

Last-place Central Valley improved to 4-19 overall and 1-7 in the Western Athletic Conference.

Ceres High dropped to 11-9 overall and remained in third place in the league standings (4-3).

The Bulldogs lost for the first time to the Hawks in five meetings under head coach Megan McGill’s guidance.

Ceres High topped Central Valley 58-16 and 52-30 last season.

“I’m extremely disappointed with how we played,” McGill said. “We came out flat and never really got into a rhythm. I felt like we were capable of so much more.”

Emily Carranza led the Hawks last week with a career-high 10 points, five rebounds and three steals.

Emily Mariani added six points, 10 rebounds, two steals and one assist.

Alayah Villa had five points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Lilyanna Madrigal had five points and six rebounds.

Ari Martinez had four points, four rebounds and three steals.

Serath Birring had two points and two assists.

Bella Delatorre had two points, seven rebounds, two assists and one steal.

“Emily has been getting better and better as the year has gone on,” Goblirsch said. “She’s really flourished in her role within the offense.”

Mariah Renteria led the Bulldogs with nine points, four rebounds, two steals and one assist.

Lilly Staggs added eight points, one rebound, one block and one steal.

Sovannary Carter had six points, seven rebounds, three steals and one block.

Presley Vierra had four points, four rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal.

Persia Rochell had two points, seven rebounds, one block and one steal.

Makaela Brown had two points, four steals and one rebound.

Jolissa Guillory had two points, one assist and one steal.

Central Valley forced 15 turnovers.

“We’ve been playing good defense all year,” Goblirsch said. “We were able to get some stops late in the game.”

The Hawks trailed by as much as 10 points during rivalry contest.

The Bulldogs struggled mightily after losing Staggs to an injury in the third quarter.

Staggs is averaging 18.4 points, 2.9 assists, 2.9 steals and 2.3 rebounds per game this season.

“You could feel the confidence growing as the game went on,” Goblirsch said. “It’s the first time our girls have played as a team for all four quarters. If we put together efforts like that, we can be on the winning side more.”

Martinez’s free throw gave the Hawks a 34-33 lead with less than 90 seconds to play.

Neither team scored the rest of the way.

“Ari is a senior and team captain,” Goblirsch said. “It was big for her confidence to knock that down.”
