Central Valley’s boys basketball team dropped to 6-11 on the season and 1-2 in the WAC following Friday’s 75-46 loss at Beyer.
“We’re behind from where we should be,” Hawks’ head coach Mike Rodriguez said. “I was hoping to be peaking by league time.”
Jace McLennon led Central Valley with 15 points, five rebounds and two assists.
Sebastian Gonzalez had 11 points, four rebounds, one block and one steal.
Silas Rodriguez had eight points, six assists, three rebounds and two steals.
Central Valley defeated Pacheco 71-35 on Wednesday in Ceres.
The Hawks scored 28 points off 23 Panther turnovers.
Parteek Sohal led Central Valley with 14 points, five rebounds, two steals and one assist.
McLennon had 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Gonzalez had nine points, five rebounds and one block.
Central Valley squandered a 13-point lead on its way to losing 65-57 at Grace Davis on Jan. 5.
McLennon led the Hawks with 14 points, eight assists, five rebounds and two steals.
Xavier Manor had 12 points, three rebounds, three steals, two rebounds and one assist.
Michael Martinez had 12 points, two rebounds, one block and one steal.
Ceres High dropped to 6-11 on the season and 0-3 in the WAC after falling 83-43 at Lathrop on Friday.
Ceres High suffered a 71-60 loss at Johansen on Wednesday.
Ceres High put up a fight in falling 77-70 to Livingston on Jan. 5 at Phil de la Porte Gymnasium.
Girls wrestling
Members of Ceres High’s and Central Valley’s girls wrestling programs competed in Pittsburg and American Canyon, respectively, during the final weeks of winter break.
Hawk standouts Alicia Espinoza and Giana Breshears both placed at the 26th Annual Napa Valley Girls Classic, which was held Jan. 9-10 at American Canyon High School.
Espinoza took third with a 5-1 record at 237 pounds.
“She (Espinoza) did an amazing job,” Hawks’ head coach Brandy Cordova said.
Breshears took eighth with a 4-3 record at 137 pounds.
She bounced back after dropping into the consolation bracket.
“She had to fight her way onto the podium,” Cordova said. “The competition she faced is what’s preparing her to do well at State.”
Central Valley teammates Joselyn Alvarez, Micaela Maldonado, Lesly Hernandez, Vanesa Mendoza-Balbuena, Addisyn Prudhel and Evalyn Zambrano all won at least one match at the Napa Valley Classic.
“It’s very encouraging,” Cordova said. “The competition at Napa is top-tier. It helps improve their confidence.”
Alvarez compiled a 2-2 record at 102 pounds.
“She’s going above and beyond from what you’d expect from a freshman,” Cordova said. “She’s doing work inside and outside of the room to improve.”
Maldonado compiled a 1-2 record at 192 pounds.
Hernandez compiled a 1-2 record at 172 pounds.
Mendoza-Balbuena compiled a 1-2 record.
Prudhel compiled a 1-2 record at 142 pounds.
Zambrano compiled a 1-2 record at 132 pounds.
Hawk MeKenzie Buenrostro compiled an 0-2 record at 117 pounds.
Central Valley’s Divina Velasquez compiled an 0-2 record at 107 pounds.
Central Valley finished 23rd in the team standings.
The Hawks totaled 67 points.
The tournament featured wrestlers from 192 high schools.
“That shows how well our girls are doing,” Cordova said.
Ceres High totaled 72 points on its way to a fifth-place showing at the Queen of the Mat, which was held Jan. 2-3 at Pittsburg High School.
Bulldog standouts Elizabeth Boyd, Mezmeriah Zuniga and Dayanna Alvarez brought home medals.
Jazlyn Cisneros-Nunes, Sharon Wheeling, Camila Alfaro, Abigail Schultz and Avril Gaona all won at least one match while representing the Bulldogs at the 52-team tournament.
Boyd won both of her matches while finishing first overall in the 237-pound weight bracket.
She was also named the tournament’s Heavyweight MVP.
Zuniga finished second at 137 pounds.
She posted a 2-1 record.
Alvarez finished second at 127 pounds.
She posted a 2-1 record.
Cisneros-Nunes posted a 2-2 record at 122 pounds.
Wheeling posted a 2-2 record at 122 pounds.
Alfaro posted a 1-2 record at 142 pounds.
Abigail Schultz posted a 1-2 record at 132 pounds.
Avril Gaona posted a 1-2 record at 102 pounds.
Girls basketball
Ceres High’s and Central Valley’s girls and boys basketball teams all played three games during the opening week of Western Athletic Conference play.
Ceres High’s girls team won two of three games.
“It was great to get those first two wins,” Bulldogs’ head coach Megan McGill stated. “Our team was aggressive defensively and we were able to turn that into offense.”
Ceres High rolled to a 51-32 victory over the host Livingston Wolves on Jan. 5.
Lilly Staggs led the Bulldogs with 21 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Sovannary Carter collected 12 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Mariah Renteria added eight points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Ceres High topped the Johansen Vikings 51-33 on Jan. 6 at Phil de la Porte Gymnasium.
Staggs led the Bulldogs with 19 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Carter tallied 14 points, seven steals, six assists, four rebounds and one block.
Renteria had eight points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Visiting Ceres High lost 56-29 to undefeated Lathrop on Thursday.
The Bulldogs moved to 9-7 on the season and 2-1 in the WAC standings.
Central Valley’s girls dropped to 3-12 on the season and 0-3 in league after losing 59-36 to Beyer on Thursday in Ceres.
Central Valley lost 45-35 at Pacheco on Jan. 6.
Ari Martinez led the Hawks with 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Bella Delatorre added eight points, eight rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals.
Central Valley lost 53-47 to visiting Grace Davis on Jan. 5.
Martinez led the Hawks with 27 points, six rebounds, four steals, one assist and one block.
Emily Mariani had seven points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Serath Birring had six points, four steals and three rebounds.
