Dawgs, Hawks claim wrestling medals
28 individual medals earned at the Havoc in the Hawks Nest Tournament

Central Valley’s and Ceres High’s girls wrestling programs won a combined 28 individual medals while competing at the Havoc in the Hawks Nest Tournament on Nov. 17 in Ceres.

“We have a lot of young wrestlers,” said Ceres High leader Curtis Hulstine. “They impressed me. The expectation was to get some mat time—real competition. They applied what they’ve been taught. They didn’t go out there and panic. They definitely have a lot of things to work on.”

“We’re very pleased with what we saw,” commented Central Valley leader Brandy Cordova. “The girls worked hard and used the skills they’ve been working on the past few weeks.”

Giana Breshears, Marianna Carranza and Tarnjot Kaur led host Central Valley.

Breshears, a 2022-23 state qualifier, claimed the 145-pound championship.

She compiled a perfect 3-0 record.

She beat Atwater’s Jenna Mora (pin, 1:26), El Capitan’s AnnMarie Wade (pin, 1:11) and Tokay’s Kelly Meehan (pin, 5:48).

“We expected her (Breshears) to do well,” Cordova said. “She worked hard the whole summer.”

Carranza placed third with a 1-2 record at 135 pounds.

She beat Atwater’s Yosselin Morales (pin, 2:00).

She lost to Livingston’s Lexi Perez (pin, 3:48) and Golden Valley’s Yurehlly Burgos (pin, 1:21).

“She (Carranza) has made improvements from last year,” she said. “She’s working on being more confident and taking more shots.”

Kaur placed fourth with a 3-2 record at 120 pounds.

She beat Lathrop’s Evelynn Ramirez (pin, 3:39), Golden Valley’s Jesmeralda Lara (pin, 1:27) and Turlock’s Leah Ladd (pin, 2:13).

She lost to Livingston’s Esmeralda Nicolas (pin, 1:52) and Johansen’s Azsaria Valdez (pin, 1:29).

“If you ask her (Kaur), she’ll tell you she should have and could have done better,” Cordova said. “She’s going to be a force to be reckoned with (this season).”

Itzel Romero, Evelyn Zambrano, Samantha Padilla, Jayden Corona, Adamariz Espinoza, Lucero Maciel, Natalie Garcia and Keilany Torres also represented the Hawks.

Romero compiled a 2-2 record at 125 pounds.

She beat Atwater’s Angela Bautista (pin, 2:00) and El Capitan’s Mallory Morris (pin, 1:42).

Zambrano compiled a 1-2 record at 145 pounds.

She beat Atwater’s McKayla Gregory (pin, 1:07).

Padilla compiled a 1-2 record at 115 pounds.

She beat Golden Valley’s Adrianna Rivera (pin, 1:02).

Corona compiled a 1-2 record at 110 pounds.

She beat Manteca’s Alisha James (pin, 1:25).

She lost to Livingston’s Mia Ceja (pin, 0:46), and Golden Valley’s Evangelina Galindo (pin, 4:39).

Espinoza compiled an 0-2 record at 170 pounds.

Maciel compiled an 0-2 record at 130 pounds.

Garcia compiled an 0-2 record at 125 pounds.

Torres compiled an 0-2 record at 110 pounds.

Madeline Schultz, Dayanna Alvarez, Elizabeth Boyd and Makynzie Hale led the Bulldogs.

Schultz finished second with a 3-1 record at 190 pounds.

She beat Sierra’s Natalie Mejia (pin, 5:12), El Capitan’s Manuela Higareda (pin, 2:50) and Ceres High’s Elizabeth Boyd (pin, 1:19).

Alvarez finished second with a 2-1 record at 140 pounds.

She beat Turlock’s Isabella Chaidez (pin, 2:46) and Downey’s Ella Jones (pin, 1:30).

Boyd finished third with a 3-1 record at 190 pounds.

She beat Manteca’s Macktnzie Sandoval (pin, 1:18), Sierra’s Natalie Mejia (pin, 4:40) and Ceres High’s Makynzie Hale (forfeit).

Hale finished fourth with a 2-2 record at 190 pounds.

She beat Buhach Colony’s Iris Reyes (pin, 1:48) and El Capitan’s Anika Niles (pin, 2:05).

Jaden Stahl, Eva Onsurez and Jadasa Haro also represented Ceres High.

Stahl posted a 1-2 record at 130 pounds.

Onsurez posted an 0-2 record at 125 pounds.

Haro posted an 0-2 record at 120 pounds.

Central Valley and Ceres High had a combined 21 grapplers wrestle in the junior-varsity division of the Hawks Nest event.

The Hawks had 16 individual competitors.

Kalli Hoffman (141-151 pounds, 3-0 record) took first.

Janelle Heras (104-110 pounds, 2-1 record), Divina Velasquez (112-120, 2-1), Lexi Alberto (122-132, 2-1), Arely Camarena (154-168) and Samantha Ortiz-Mendoza (180-215) all took second.

Joslyn Vega (110-113, 1-2), Corena McDaniel (132-136, 1-2), Jocelyn De La Torre (134-138, 1-2), Mariana Nayares (136-141, 1-2), Christina Menera (145-161, 1-2) and Angelica Hernandez (176-189, 0-2) took third.

Lily Schmidt (113-118, 0-3), Navreet Pattar (115-125, 0-3), Alexa Cardenas (132-146, 0-3) and Emilia Barragan (140-142, 0-3) took fourth.

Carmen Arce-Hayes (132-146, 1-2) led Ceres High with a third-place finish.

Amelia Duarte (141-151, 0-3), Illiana Enriques (136-141, 0-3), Camila Orellana (134-138, 0-3) and Olivia Duran (122-132, 0-3) all took fourth.

The tournament featured wrestlers from 22 different schools, including Central Valley, Ceres High, Atwater, Buhach Colomy, Central Catholic, Downey, El Capitan, Golden Valley, Johansen, Pitman, Lathrop, Liberty Ranch, Livingston, Lodi, Los Banos, Manteca, Modesto, Pacheco, Sierra, Tokay, Turlock and Venture Academy.
