Mixed results in high school competition

Central Valley’s baseball team improved its overall record to 4-4 this past week.

The Hawks won one of three games.

Visiting Central Valley shut out Modesto High 9-0 on March 10.

Freshman Chris Garcia had nine strikeouts and gave up just two hits while starring at pitcher.

Alan Lopez batted 2-for-3 with three RBIs and one run.

Ryan Estermann batted 1-for-2 with three runs.

Caiden Whittle batted 1-for-2 with one double, one RBI and one run.

Samuel Wilson batted 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run.

Gabrial Lopez batted 1-for-4 with one RBI and one run.

Edmund Stewart and Garret Garcia both batted 1-for-3 with one run.

Central Valley lost 5-0 to Gregori on March 11 in Ceres.

Gabrial Lopez allowed no earned runs and three hits with seven strikeouts while pitching a complete game.

Estermann tripled.

Central Valley suffered a 6-3 loss at Hilmar on March 8.

Diego DelaHoya pitched.

He surrendered just two earned runs, scattered five hits and tallied five strikeouts.

Estermann batted 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and one run.

Stewart batted 1-for-3 with two runs.


Dawgs beaten

Ceres High’s baseball team dropped to 1-7 on the season this past week after sustaining three losses.

Ceres High lost 11-5 to visiting Atwater on March 11 at Art McRae Field.

Freshman Reis Smith batted 1-for-2 with one double, two RBIs and one run.

Josh Prestridge batted 2-for-4 with one run.

Jorge Gonzalez batted 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Landyn Hudson and Nick Villalobos both scored once.

Ceres High lost 10-7 at Hughson on March 9.

Prestridge batted 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs.

Isac Cordova batted 2-for-4 with one double and two RBIs.

Brandon Garcia batted 1-for-3 with one RBI and two runs.

Villalobos batted 1-for-4 with one double and one RBI.

Zion Wesir batted 2-for-2 with one RBI.

El Capitan cruised to a 10-1 win over Ceres High on March 8 in Merced.

Villalobos batted 1-for-2 with one RBI.

Prestridge scored once.

Hudson, Gonzalez and Adrian Ontiveros all singled.


SOFTBALL

Ceres High’s and Central Valley’s softball teams posted identical 1-3 records at the Rainbow Classic this past week at Rainbow Fields.

“We faced some tough competition,” Bulldogs’ head coach Mike Corsaut said.

Ceres High improved to 4-6 on the season after closing out the tournament with an 8-2 win over Pitman on Friday.

Brooklyn Heffernan allowed just one earned run and four hits with eight strikeouts at pitcher.

The Bulldogs collected 17 hits on offense.

Heffernan batted 3-for-3 with three RBIs.

Isabela Giraldes batted 4-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs.

Alizae Cole batted 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs.

Ava Montesdeoca batted 3-for-4 with one triple and three runs.

Emma Johnson batted 1-for-4 with one RBI.

Antonia Solis batted 1-for-1 with one double and one run.

Ceres High lost 9-3 to Enochs on Friday.

The Bulldogs never recovered after giving up four unearned runs in the first inning.

Montesdeoca batted 2-for-3 with one triple and one RBI.

Giraldes batted 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Natalie Gomes batted 1-for-1 with one triple and one run.

Tatum George batted 1-for-1 with one run.

Aryana Maldonado doubled and scored once.

Cole and Alayna DeLaTorre both singled.

Ceres High lost 7-2 to Central Catholic on March 8.

“They swung the bats well,” Corsaut said.

Giraldes batted 2-for-3 with one double.

Kareli Hernandez batted 1-for-3 with one double, one RBI and one run.

Johnson batted 1-for-2 with one run.

DeLaTorre collected one RBI.

Ceres High lost 8-7 to St. Mary’s on March 8.

The Rams battled back from 4-0, 4-2, 5-2 and 7-5 deficits.

Johnson batted 2-for-3 with two homers, three RBIs and two runs.

Montesdeoca batted 3-for-4 with one double and two runs.

Cole batted 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run.

Heffernan scored one run.

Central Valley won its tourney opener, 15-3, versus Pacheco on March 10.

The Hawks lost 13-0 to East Union on March 10 and 12-8 to Calaveras and 8-4 to Beyer on March 11.

Central Valley dropped to 2-7 on the season.


SWIMMING

Ceres High’s girls and boys swim teams dropped their Western Athletic Conference dual meets to Beyer on Friday in Ceres.

Ceres High’s girls squad lost 115-38 to the Patriots.

Reagan Hensley placed second in the 100 fly and 100 back.

Amber Hopwood placed second in the 100 breast and fourth in the 100 free.

Berlin Kahl placed third in the 200 free.

Jessica Potts placed third in the 100 fly.

Elise Cannella placed third in the 100 free and fourth in the 50 free.

Liset Renteria placed fourth in the 100 fly.

Makayla Hair placed fourth in the 100 back.

Brooke Trio placed fifth in the 50 free.

Jewell Stahl placed fifth in the 100 free.

Maci Farinha placed fifth in the 100 breast.

Ceres High’s boys squad was dealt a 120-15 loss.

Blake Barr placed third in the 50 free and fifth in the 100 free.

Nikahli Garcia placed third in the 100 back.

Jesus Valdovinos placed third in the 100 breast, fourth in the 100 free and fifth in the 50 free.


BOYS TENNIS

Central Valley’s boys tennis team topped Atwater and Livingston in Central California Conference play last week.

The Hawks improved to 3-1 in the CCC standings with a 5-4 win over host Atwater on Thursday.

“Atwater is solid,” head coach Mike Rodriguez said. “I knew it was going to be a close one. The kids competed well.”

Central Valley won four of six singles and one of three doubles matches versus Atwater.

Omar Lepe prevailed, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 2 singles.

Lourdvic Polanes prevailed, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.

Enrique Lepe prevailed, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5 singles.

Jesus Hernandez prevailed, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.

Aiden Sinlapaxay and Jose Alvarez prevailed, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1 doubles.

Central Valley rolled to an 8-0 road victory against Livingston on Wednesday.

“We could have done better closing out matches,” Rodriguez said.

The Hawks won all five singles and three doubles matches.

Ruben Hernandez prevailed, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles.

Omar Lepe prevailed, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2 singles.

Polanes prevailed, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 singles.

Willy Souksavath prevailed, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 singles.

Enrique Lepe prevailed, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 5 singles.

Sinlapaxay and Alvarez prevailed, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.

Anantah Sivongxay and Dylan Chauhan prevailed, 0-6, 7-5, 10-4, at No. 2 doubles.

Jesus Hernandez and Daren Pongbandith prevailed, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7, at No. 3 doubles. 


BOYS GOLF

Central Valley’s boys golf team won one of two matches this past week.

The Hawks dropped to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Central California Conference standings after losing 230-275 to El Capitan on March 9 at Merced Golf & Country Club.

Matteo Bonales led Central Valley with a 45.

Victor Alvarez, Armando Guajardo, Alijah Lopez and Jadon Rafatti shot 47, 59, 60 and 64, respectively.

Central Valley bested Manteca 271-334 in non-league play on March 10 at Manteca Park Golf Course.

Bonales led the Hawks with a 40.

Alvarez (48), Dillon Brush (59), Guajardo (61) and Lopez (63) rounded out Central Valley’s scorecard.

Ceres High’s boys golf team lost by just seven strokes, 308-315, to Manteca on March 7 at Manteca Park Golf Course.

The Bulldogs dropped to 0-2 on the season.

Erik Hott led Ceres High with a 40.

Bulldog teammates Jayson Homsombath, Zachary Chastain, Benjamin Larranaga and Christopher Dunn shot 50, 73, 74 and 78, respectively.
