Tennis playoffs within reach for Bulldogs

Ceres High’s varsity girls tennis team boosted its playoff hopes this past week.

The Bulldogs (7-3) remained in third place in the Western Athletic Conference after beating one of two opponents.

Ceres High had a two-game lead over Johansen and Beyer in the WAC standings as of Friday.

The top three teams will be awarded playoff berths at the end of the regular season.

Host Ceres High edged Johansen 6-3 on Oct. 9.

The Bulldogs won two singles matches in three sets to secure the victory.

Gurmannet Bahia defeated Morgan Boyd 1-6, 7-6, 7-6 in No. 3 singles play.

Gurmenjit Bahia defeated Evelyn Tamayo 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in No. 4 singles play.

Tania Garfias, Mahnoor Kahloon, Leisha Jimenez, Roxanna Bonilla, Evelin Guardado and Pamelina Lo also contributed to Ceres High’s team point total.

Garfias defeated McKenna Taylor 6-1, 6- 2 in No. 1 singles play.

Kahloon defeated J-lah Johnson 6-1, 6-3 in No. 6 singles play.

Jimenez and Bonilla defeated Keila Aguayo and Arianna Tapia 6-2, 6-4 in No. 2 doubles play.

Guardado and Lo defeated Sitlali Pervelo and Leslie Young 6-2, 6-0 in No. 3 doubles play.

Jillian Jimenez lost 6-1, 6-2 to Ashley Cabral in No. 2 singles play.

Jasmine Bahia lost 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to Alondra Jaquez in No. 4 singles play.

Mercedez Wood and Monica Esparza lost 7-5, 3-6, 10-7 to Anais Gonzalez and Gayle Cabral in No. 1 doubles play.

Ceres High lost 5-4 to visiting Beyer on Oct. 7.

The Bulldogs won the first meeting, 6-3, on Sept. 12.

“Although our skillset is very equal to Beyer, somedays the energy level and mindset are not there,” Casey said. “Unfortunately, this match was one of those days. I am proud of the effort the team put into each match.”

Ceres High took two of three doubles matches from Beyer during the second meeting.

Kahloon and Guardado defeated Noelle Martin and Gracie Maldonado 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, in No. 2 doubles play.

Bonilla and Jimenez defeated Jordan Hodges and Hailey Satha 6-1, 6-1 in No. 3 doubles play.

Wood and Esparza lost 6-2, 6-2 to Camille Cortez and Tabby Brown in No. 1 doubles play.

Garfias and Jimenez both won their respective singles matches.

Garfias defeated Cynthia Madrigal 6-3, 6-4 in No. 1 singles play.

Jimenez defeated Alexis Luna 6-3, 6-4 in No. 2 singles play.

Gurmannet Bahia lost 6-2, 7-5 to Bella Madero in No. 3 singles play.

Jasmine Bahia lost 6-2, 6-4 to Zoey Moffitt in No. 4 singles play.

Gurmenjit Bahia lost 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 to Rayana Arellano in No. 5 singles play.

Christel Ontiveros lost 6-3, 6-2 to Mary Ruettermaan in No. 6 singles play.
