Tigers, Mustangs knock off previously-unbeaten Dawgs

Ceres High’s varsity girls tennis team is no longer unbeaten.

Winners of their first four matches, the Bulldogs dropped to third place in the Western Athletic Conference last week after losing to Mountain House and Los Banos.

“The pressure got to us,” No. 1 singles player Tania Garfias said. “Confidence was the key. It was low for some of us, including myself. We knew it was going to be a challenge. They’re our toughest opponents in league.”

Host Los Banos handed Ceres High its first loss of the season.

The Tigers defeated the Bulldogs 7-2 on Sept. 23.

Ceres High managed to win just one of six singles and one of three doubles matches versus Los Banos.

Gurmen Bahia topped Petrina Gilardi 6-3, 6-4 in No. 5 singles play.

Garfias lost 6-1, 6-1 to Kierstyn Cotta in No. 1 singles play.

Jasmine Bahia lost 6-0, 6-1 to Sarah White in No. 3 singles play.

Gurmannet Bahia lost 6-4, 7-5 to Ally Watkins in No. 4 singles play.

Christel Ontiveros lost 6-1, 6-1 to Erin Vierra in No. 6 singles play.

Liesha Jimenez and Evelin Guardado Barron topped Christina Rocha and Victoria Paolini 8-6, 7-5 in No. 3 doubles play.

Mahnoor Kahloon and Monica Esparza Diaz lost 6-0, 4-6, 11-9 to Elle Bachelder and Jaylen Meza in No. 1 doubles play.

Roxanna Bonilla and Mercedez Wood lost 6-3, 7-5 to Laila Medina and Mia Cruz in No. 2 doubles play.

Visiting Mountain House shut out Ceres High 9-0 on Wednesday.

The Mustangs swept all six singles and three doubles matches versus the Bulldogs.

Garfias lost 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 to Sana Patel in No. 1 singles play.

Jillian Jimenez lost 6-0, 6-2 to Saanvi Chilakapati in No. 2 singles play.

Gurmen Bahia lost 6-1, 6-0 to Elyse Low in No. 3 singles play.

Jasmine Bahia lost 6-1, 6-0 to Malvika Seth in No. 4 singles play.

Gurmannet Bahia lost 6-1, 6-1 to Bella Bucoy in No. 5 singles play.

Ontiveros lost 6-2, 6-4 to Katharine Smith in No. 6 singles play.

Kahloon and Esparza Diaz lost 6-1, 6-0 to Iffy Ikechiuku and Crystal Chum in No. 1 doubles play.

Wood and Jimenez lost 6-1, 6-2 to Noor Manjal and Kylie DeCroos in No. 2 doubles play.

Jennifer Orellana and Pamelina Lo lost 6-0, 6-0 to Tina Le and Erin Su in No. 3 doubles play.

The Bulldogs fell to 4-2 in the WAC. “I have confidence in my team,” Garfias said. “We’ll bounce back. The ability is there.”
