The Ceres High JV boys basketball team failed to score in double figures in three of four quarters in losing 47-29 to Sierra on Dec. 20 in Manteca.
“There's no continuity,” Bulldogs coach Jim Pernetti said.
Sierra improved to 7-2 overall.
Ceres High fell to 0-6 overall.
“Our success isn't going to be measured by wins,” Pernetti said. “We're a very young team. Physically, we are not big. It (winning) is going to be a challenge. I'm not going to give up on them. I'm going to make them the best they can be. They got to want it.”
The Bulldogs' starting lineup totaled 27 points against the Timberwolves.
Rafael Torres led the way with eight points. Andre Walcott and Zach Atchison had seven points apiece. Marcus Hilgen and Thomas Vanderlaan added three and two points, respectively. Michael Staggs scored two points off the bench.
Nevin Sahota led Sierra with 12 points, including two 3-pointers. Stephen Sylvester scored nine points off the bench.
Sahota helped the Timberwolves build a 20-point lead in the first half. He accounted for 12 of Sierra's 31 points. Sahota made 4 of 4 free throws.
Ahead 31-11, the Timberwolves increased their lead to 41-14 in the third quarter. Sierra scored 10 points, seven more than Ceres High.
The Bulldogs outscored the Timberwolves 15-6 in the fourth quarter. Bertolotti, Sandhu and Lampley had eight, three and two points, respectively.
“We played good defense in the second half,” Pernetti said.
The Timberwolves shot 80 percent (12-for-15) from the free-throw line for the game.
The Bulldogs shot 71 percent (5-for-7) from the charity stripe.
Sonora tops Ceres
Hilgen scored 12 points during the Bulldogs' 52-32 loss to the Wildcats on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at Bud Castle Gym in Sonora. He was recently promoted from the freshman squad.
“Marcus is a really good athlete,” Pernetti said. “He hustles. He's tough. He's a great kid.”
Vanderlaan and Torres added nine and three points, respectively, for Ceres High. Walcott, Atchison, Staggs and Tony Bradford all had two points.
Taylor Thrift tallied a game-high 20 points, including four 3-pointers, for Sonora. Brenden Evans, Jason Biehl and Matt Rolei added nine, six and five points, respectively.
“We had a hard time running our offense,” Pernetti said. “We had 13 points at halftime.
