Ceres High School's junior-varsity football squad pitched a shutout in the first half and held on for a 21-6 victory over Ripon on Friday at Bulldog Stadium.

"It's a great way to start off the season," head coach Clinton Goblirsch said. "It was a total team effort."

Ceres quarterback Blake Hurst completed 9 of 19 passes for 113 yards and one touchdown.

Caden Johnson caught six passes for 94 yards and one TD.

Josh Avila carried the ball 17 times for 103 yards and a score.

Devon Ruger rushed for 11 yards on four attempts, hauled in an 8-yard pass and converted all three of his point-after kicks.

"We were able to run and throw the ball," Goblirsch said. "And we capitalized on their mistakes."

Ceres High limited Ripon to less than 125 yards of total offense.

Hurst, Arroyo and Eric Madrigal each had one interception.

"Our defense played really aggressive," Goblirsch said.

It didn't take long for Ceres High to score.

The Bulldogs marched 65 yards on their first possession

Hurst and Johnson capped the drive with a 26-yard pass-and-catch score.

Hurst returned an interception 32 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.

Bulldog teammate Joey Longtin recovered a fumble at the Ripon 20 on the ensuing kickoff.

Ceres capitalized several minutes later when Avila powered his way into the end zone from the 1-yard line.

The Indians' lone highlight of the game came early in the third quarter. Ripon returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a score.

Ceres High will look to improve to 2-0 this Friday when it plays host to Hilmar (1-0). The non-league contest will begin at 5:30 p.m.
