JV girls place second at home tourney

With Erica Arellano, Kyleesha Williams and Dayna Butler leading the way, the Ceres High JV girls basketball team finished second in a field of eight with a 2-1 record at its home tournament.

"Those three usually never come out of the game unless they're in foul trouble or hurt," said Ceres coach Kassi Baker.

Williams made the all-tournament team.

"She was our most valuable player," Baker said. "She made things happen."

The Bulldogs (3-1) shot just 17 percent (11-for-63) from the field in losing 38-29 to Johansen in the championship game on Saturday.

"Everything we put in worked, offensively and defensively, in the first two games," Baker said. "The last game we could not make a shot."

Arellano had 12 points, eight steals and five rebounds, Cassie Rayford scored eight points and grabbed seven rebounds, and Jamie Boling added six points and four steals against Johansen, which led 22-8 at the break.

The Bulldogs outscored the Vikings 21-16 in the second half, including 17-7 in the fourth quarter.

Ceres shot 50 percent (6-for-12) from the free-throw line. Johansen shot 36 percent (5-for-14) from the foul line.

Ceres defeated Patterson 54-33 in the semifinal game on Friday.

Arellano had a team-high 15 points, eight rebounds and eight steals, Rayford tallied 10 points and six rebounds, and Boling added eight points and six steals for the Bulldogs, who led 32-18 at halftime.

Ceres outscored Patterson 22-15 in the second half.

"None of our starters even played in the fourth quarter," Baker said.

Ceres routed Golden Valley 42-24 in the first round of the tourney on Thursday.

Nine players scored for the Bulldogs, who led 21-11 at intermission.

Rayford scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds. Williams and Susane Lathsavong had eight and seven points, respectively. Susane Lathsavong had seven points. Arellano had five points, six rebounds and four steals. Boling had five points and four steals. Butler had five points. LaJuana Guillory had two points.
