Wresters from Ceres, Central Valley and Hughson high schools enjoyed a fair amount of success at Escalon's Lloyd C. Engel Tournament last Friday and Saturday.

The Bulldogs, Hawks and Huskies combined to win more than a dozen medals.

"We had a lot of matches we should have won the first day but didn't," Ceres High head coach Jon Nowicki said. "The kids wrestled to their potential the second day. We definitely ended on a strong note."

Added Central Valley leader Rob Beckhart: "Overall, I'm pretty happy. I got to take some JV kids up who usually don't wrestle varsity."

The Bulldogs and Huskies had a total of five grapplers place in the top three in the "A" bracket.

Ceres High's Gabe Balderas (112 pounds) and Hughson's Jesse McDaniel (145s) earned runner-up honors.

"He (Balderas) did a great job," Nowicki said.

Nick Moran (145s) of Ceres High and Andrew Patrick (130s) and Cody Rosenbaum (135s) of Hughson finished in third place.

Ceres High's Wesley Schwieger (119s, first place), Nick Serratos (171s, second), Joey Bettencourt (103s, third), Gabriel Solis (125s, third) and Ritchie Solis (135s, third), and Central Valley's Miguel Espinoza (125s, second) competed in the "B" bracket.

Ceres High's Brandon Christeson won the 125-pound championship in the "C" bracket.

Bulldog teammate Bradley Bruton placed second at 160 pounds.

Central Valley's Evan Elliott (189s, second) and Adrian Vizcaino (171s, third) also had solid outings.

"That's the best I've seen him (Elliott) wrestle since he was in high school," Beckhart said.
