The Ceres High girls tennis team edged the Beyer Patriots 3-2 in Modesto on Thursday.

"It was a very close match," said Ceres coach Bryan Harden, whose team improved to 1-2 in the Modesto Metro Conference, 3-2 overall.

The Bulldogs won two of three singles and one of two doubles matches.

Amanda Guajardo beat Beyer's Sloan Ardis 6-2, 6-0 in No. 1 singles play.

"She finally got it going," Harden said. "She was kind of sleepwalking through her first few matches."

Ashlee Moring beat Beyer's Katrina Nelson 6-3, 6-4 in No. 2 singles play.

"That was a very tough match for her," Harden said. "Katrina beat her in a tournament over the summer."

Claire Whiteside beat Ceres' Logan Harden 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5) in No. 3 singles play.

Harden blew a 4-1 lead in the first set. She battled back from a 5-2 deficit in the second set.

"I think she ran out of gas, mentally more than physically," Bryan said.

Haylee Adrian and Kamie Machado beat Beyer's April Rowan and Grace Van Hoy 6-2, 6-4 in No. 2 doubles play.

"They played some pretty good tennis," Harden said.

Melissa Gonzales and Ramina Amino lost 6-1, 6-3 to Beyer's Catherine Lee and Kelly Gabrielson in No. 1 doubles play.

"They didn't play well," Harden said. "They were out of sync from the get go."
