The Ceres High volleyball team almost upset Beyer, the top-ranked team in the Modesto Metro Conference, Thursday night in Modesto.
The Bulldogs lost 25-19, 15-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-5 to the Patriots.
"Of all the teams in the MMC, I think they play the best defense," said Beyer coach Dave Winfrey. "They're very competitive."
Elisha Ferguson had 25 assists and 15 digs, Krystle Brown tallied 10 kills, five digs and three aces and Jessica Hunter added 15 kills and four blocks for the Bulldogs, who fell to 3-5 in the league standings. Ceres' Meghan Franksen, Katie Richards and Jennifer Arnold had 23, 13 and 11 digs, respectively.
Kelly Simpson had 20 kills and 18 digs, Stephanie Scott had 15 kills and Heidi Miller had 34 assists for Beyer, which improved to 8-0 in the MMC. Beyer's Heidi Smith had five aces and Amanda Aschenbrenner had three blocks.
"I'm not disappointed," said Ceres coach Sue Garcia. "We took the first-place team to the limit.
"We played really great defense."
Simpson, a 6-foot-1 sophomore, accounted for seven of Beyer's 15 points, including four of the final five, in Game 5. She had three kills and one block.
"We didn't let them get into a rhythm in the game," Winfrey said.
The Bulldogs managed to win Game 4 despite blowing an eight-point lead.
Franksen and Jessica Mazza accounted for Ceres' final two points. Both of them had a kill.
Beyer overcame a seven-point deficit in Game 3.
The Bulldogs cruised past the Patriots in Game 2. They took control with a 9-0 run.
Beyer used an 18-12 run to secure a six-point victory over Ceres in Game 1. There were five ties and six lead changes.
The Bulldogs fell 25-22, 25-20, 25-20 to the Patriots at Ceres High School on Sept. 21.
JV tied for second
