Nine teams vied for the NSA Western World Series A-division softball crown.

The Ceres Sizzle 14-and-under travel squad excelled in all areas en route to a first-place finish.

The prestigious tournament was held, July 18-21, in Las Vegas.

"We did everything right," head coach Vicki Wilson said. "We hit. We fielded. We had great pitching. This is one of the best teams we've ever coached."

Second-seeded Ceres won five of six games.

The Sizzle finished ahead of eight other teams, including the Sutter Buttes Thunder, Central Coast Intensity, Cal Lady Grizzlies, Central Coast Athletics, California Aftershock, Destroyers, NorCal Rogue and Las Vegas Bandits.

Ceres compiled a perfect 4-0 record in the World Series bracket.

The Sizzle pounded the Thunder 9-1 for the title on July 21 in 109-degree heat.

"Our girls were ready to play in that kind of weather because they're well-conditioned," Wilson said.

Jessica Arreola hit a two-run, inside-the-park homer.

Arianna Alderete pitched a complete game. She ended the game with a strikeout.

"She pitched very well and we made some great plays behind her," Wilson said.

The Sizzle grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

"We took the wind out of their sails early," Wilson said.

Ceres edged the Intensity 4-3 on July 20, and topped the Thunder 6-1 and Rogue 9-6 on July 19.

The Sizzle had a 1-1 mark in in pool play.

Ceres routed the Destroyers 7-0 and earned a narrow 2-1 victory over the Intensity on July 18.

The Sizzle qualified for the Western World Series in March.

Ceres players exceeded coach Wilson's expectations in Las Vegas.

"I was just hoping to get to play on Saturday," she said. "We just kept winning. It took the whole team. We have a great group of girls. They all get along. They pick each other up. That's really important."

The Sizzle placed in eight tournaments this summer, including first four times, second three times and third once.
